Private Tasting for Skeleton Canada!
Posted on November 5, 2012
The Kensington Wine Market donates several private whisky tastings a year to selected city charities to aid in their fundraising. We donated one such private tasting in support of Canada's National Skeleton Team. This past Friday our Scotch expert Andrew Ferguson conducted a Rare Malts for the group who purchased the tasting including Olympians Mike Douglas and John Montgomery. Canada's winter Olympic athletes are working hard getting ready for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia.
Friday's tasting consisted of seven whiskies sampled blind: Old Malt Cask Littlemill19 Year, Cooper's Choice Lochside 1967 44 Year, MacKinlay's Rare Old Highland Malt, Glen Spey 21 Year, Auchroisk 20 Year, Glen Garioch 1978 and Kilchoman KWM Sherry Cask.
At the end of the tasting the participants voted on the whiskies and they finished in the following order:
1) Glen Spey 21 Year - Only 36 Total Bottles Came Into Alberta - $374.99 + GST
2) Auchroisk 20 Year - Only 36 Total Bottles Came Into Alberta - $245.99 + GST
3) Cooper's Choice Lochside 1967 - 44 Years Old and Very Rare - $226.99 + GST
4) Four Way Tie for Fourth:
- Glen Garioch 1978 - Exclusive to KWM - $448.99 + GST
- Kilchoman KWM Sherry Cask - Bottled Exclusively for KWM - $114.99+ GST*
- MacKinlay's Rare  Old Highland Malt - Exclusive to KWM - $209.99 + GST*
- Old Malt Cask Littlemill 19 Year - Exclusive toKWM - $156.99 + GST
* Interestingly the best selling whiskies after the tasting were the MacKinlay's Rare Old Highland Malt and the Kilchoman.
"Big Thanks from my end to all that attended the Kensington Wine Market tasting.  I was not only impressed with the quality of samplings but also the extensive knowledge of the production process by Andrew.  Because of your efforts and generosity, winter Olympians like Jon and myself are better prepared to tackle the challenges of the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia.
Big Thanks again,
Mike Douglas"...
The Kensington Beer Blog - Edition#7

April 13, 2012Edition #7
Well, it's been a long time since most of you received a Brews News from us here at Kensington Wine Market, some of you may have wondered what has happened to the newsletter. I apologize if you have felt some Brews News deprivation. The long delay is mainly a result of changing store personnel. In December, our long time Beer Guy, Mike Robertson, left Calgary for new opportunities in Vancouver. We wish him the best. As a result of Mike's departure, the reins of the beer sections were handed over, so I should introduce myself. My name is Marty Rozon. I have worked for the market for over six years now, having managed the Canadian wine section for several years, while keeping up to date on as much of the beer and whisky as I possibly could taste. Having now taken over managing the beer section, I now have a better appreciation of the work Mike did for us in the past to satisfy the beer appetites of the markets many customers.
A great thing about the beer market in Alberta at present is the large number of new and interesting products coming into the province on an ongoing basis. Some of the products are new local breweries, like Village Brewery, or come from next door in British Columbia, or from farther afield, like Austria or Switzerland.
New Arrivals
Here are some recent new and returning Breweries or products in the store. It is by no means a complete list. I will, when possible, give you an indication if the product is limited availability.
De Molen, Netherlands: A very recent arrival in Alberta, we recently brought in 4 beers from De Molen (or The Mill Brewery). They are all very highly rated on ratebeer.com, scoring well above the 90th percentile.
Bloed, Zweet & Tranen - $5.19 (330 ml) a smoked ale using English and German smoked malts
Hemel & Aarde - $18.29 (750 ml) an Imperial Stout using heavily smoked malt from Bruichladdich distillery. A limited quantity product.
Rasputin - $6.99 (330 ml) a Russian Imperial stout. A limited quantity product.
Vuur & Vlam - $14.19 (750 ml) a well hopped India Pale Ale
Birrificio Del Ducato: This Italian craft brewer, previously available last year for a short time, has now returned with new supplies of earlier products, like New Morning, but also with several completely new brews to the market.
Via Emilia - $6.59 (330 ml) a pilsner, rated 98th percentile by style, quite drinkable and well flavoured, more than just a palate cleanser between real beers (the use I would assign to most lagers)
Verdi Imperial Stout - $6.59 (330 ml) a Russian Imperial Stout with hot peppers!
BIA IPA - $4.59 (330 ml) - an IPA, under the Birra Italiano Artiginiale label
Maisel :This German brewer has existed in Bayreuth since 1887, so lots of tradition behind...
Kensington Wine Market's 2009 Bordeaux Are Now In!
Posted on November 5, 2012
Kensington Wine Market purchases Bordeaux futures every year, and our 2009's have matured. Visit our website for more information or call 403-283-8000 for the latest availability. Here is a rundown of our 2009 Bordeaux:Pomerol
Chateau la Violette 2009 $349.99
"Wow, did I underrate this wine from cask. I thought it was outstanding, but this wine is one of the superstars of the vintage. An extraordinarily provocative, exotic nose of a florist shop intermixed with raspberry and blueberry liqueur soars from the glass of this very aromatic/fragrant wine. Dense purple in color, with silky tannins, a full-bodied mouthfeel, great nobility and palate penetration, this is a sensational, compelling Pomerol to drink over the next 20-25 years". 98 Robert Parker
Chateau Trotanoy 2009 $281.99
An absolutely prodigious wine, the dense purple 2009 Trotanoy exudes extraordinary notes of minerals, forest floor, sweet black currants and black cherry jam along with floral notes and graphite. Very full-bodied, with silky tannins, fabulous opulence and palate presence, this terrific wine should be at its best in 7-10 years and last for 20 or more. Think of it as a more concentrated, “bigger†version of the extraordinary 1998. 98 Robert Parker
Chateau l 'Evangile 2009 $510.99 SOLD OUT!
An astonishing effort from the Rothschild family, the 2009 l’Evangile may be the reference point offering from this estate for decades to come. A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc aged in 100% new oak, with 15% natural alcohol, it exhibits a sumptuous bouquet of caramels, black raspberry liqueur, blackberries, violets, graphite and truffles. Thick, viscous flavors are reminiscent of such super-ripe vintages as 1982, 1959, 1949 and 1947. The striking aromatics, massive, full-bodied mouthfeel and multilayered palate that resembles a skyscraper in the mouth offer an abject lesson in great winemaking, extraordinary terroir, and the ability to combine power with precision, elegance and freshness. This is unquestionably a huge wine, but it also possesses mindboggling complexity and finesse. Because of its sheer extract and velvety personality, it will be drinkable in 4-5 years, and will keep for four decades or more where well-stored. The most profound L’Evangile ever made? 100 Robert Parker
Chateau La Providence 2009 $148.99
This masculine-styled Pomerol exhibits notes of iron, earth, vitamins, black cherries, and blackberries. It is reminiscent of a Trotanoy in terms of personality and appellation character. Full-bodied and super-dense with a boatload of tannin as well as unbridled power, richness, and depth, this 2009 will require patience (5-7 years), but should last for three decades or more. (Tasted once...
