  1. SMWS 36.58: Chilli porridge sprinkled with flowers - 54% - 9 Year - Speyside - Refill Ex-Bourbon Barrel - Outturn: 256 Bottle - Panel's Tasting Note: "The nose had oodles of fruit (apple, pear, passion-fruit, lemon, raisins) – also marzipan, hazelnut, marshmallows, iced caramels, fudge, sherbet, custard creams and some fragrant floral and woodyelements. Hot and sweet, the palate spoke to us of pencil chewing,Mexican hot chocolate, chilli porridge sprinkled with sweet flowers;then passion-fruit and hay. The reduced nose became more dustyand chalky – popped rice, rainbow drops, hay, plywood andpeaches. With water, the palate developed herbal, medicinal andtobacco notes, as well as gooseberry chews, flower bulbs andchocolate-covered pretzels. The distillery lies between Aberlour andthe mountain it is named after." Drinking Tip: "To accompany a lazy weekend brunch?Needs very little water, if any." - $102.99

  2. SMWS 121.55: Bitter marmalade & boozy prunes - 56.1% - 12 Year - Highland (Island) - Refill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead - Outturn: 274 Bottles - Panel's Tasting Note: "Initial nose impressions included gym shoes, candles and faintstruck match – soon replaced by treacle toffee, light sherry andslightly over-done fruit cake – then vanilla, rhubarb and gingercrumble, peanut brittle and trifle with strawberry and coconut. Withwater the nose found cough lozenges, scallop shells, Bakelite andbrine. The unreduced palate tasted of fruit cake, hard toffee, bittermarmalade, burnt plums and boozy prunes. Water improved it,taking away the bitter and the burnt elements – now soft toffee, liquorice allsorts, Oddfellows (spicy sweets), chocolate, glazeddonuts, Aberdeen butteries and hints of mint. This Lochranzadistillery was completed in 1995." Drinking Tip: "Would go with food - or a tasty wee dramfor early evening after work. Improveswith water." - $122.99

  3. SMWS 7.77: Elegant ladies taking tea - 54.8% - 22 Year - Speyside - Refill Ex-Bourbon Barrel - Outturn: 203 Bottles -Panel's Tasting Note: "The nose was attractive and evocative – lady’s perfume (talc,Yardley) soft leather, raincoats, mint, nettle, Plasticine and soap. Inreduction, fruits emerged (banana loaf, apple pie, pear, berrycompote, lollipops) with tea cakes, chocolate and perfumedcigarettes – imagine elegant ladies smoking after drinking tea. Thepalate was absolutely fabulous! Big fruit flavours (apple, raspberry, pomegranate) swirled around with perfume, leather, oak, coconutmeringue and mint leaf to gain our resounding approval. Withwater – elegant and delightful – fruity perfumes, cookie jars, butterscotch, shoe shops and Woodbine fags on an oakmantel-shelf. The founder of Nikka had work experience here in1919." Drinking Tip: "A reflective dram - or one for the CalendarGirls to share." - $175.49

  4. SMWS 76.89: A whisper of decadence - 57.1% - 16 Year - Speyside - First Fill Sherry Butt - Outturn: 594 Bottles - Panel's Tasting Note: "In this sample from Dufftown’s oldest distillery, we recognizedtypical sherry markers – struck matches, treacle toffee, custardtarts, welly boots and honey-glazed ham with Branston. It also hadpolished wood, apple sauce and intimations of dry smoke. Themouth-drawing palate had cinder toffee, ginger, molasses andbarbequed bananas and pork sausages. In reduction, the nosebecame more interesting; treacle toffee in waxed paper, salty beef, hay, lime, orange jelly, iced caramels and chocolate Easter eggs;and we found it much more drinkable – indeed the flavours ofChristmas cake, mocha coffee and chocolate ginger biscuits gaveit a whisper of decadence." Drinking Tip: "A late evening, maybe after dinner, dram." - $133.99

  5. SMWS 4.165: Soft peat & seaside piers - 50.5% - 22 Year - Highland (Island) - Refill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead - Outturn: 211 Bottles - Panel's Tasting Note: "First impressions of linseeds, window putty and mixed nut cracknelgave way to seaside piers, soft Orcadian peat, toffee nougat, cutgrass and waxy heather. A chewy taste of toffee crisp, soft heather, mint hot chocolate, Murray mints with saccharin bitterness and aminerally peat heat left the Panel pleasantly surprised. With water(although the Panel agreed it didn’t need it) the nose now becamemilder (one Panellist remarked she got a whiff of soft strong goat’scheese), heather, toffee, nougat, peardrops and warm engineswere more familiar. The palate was creamy, sweet, mild and saltywith seaweed, Caramac bars and more toffee. From Orkney’slargest distillery." Drinking Tip: "While relaxing on a canal barge." - $174.99

  6. SMWS 3.193: Baby-faced arsonist - 57.7% - 14 Year - Islay - Refill Sherry Butt - Outturn: 601 Bottles - Panel's Tasting Note: "‘Sweet’, ‘salty’, ‘resinous’ - some of the Panel’s utterances on first nosing;far-away fish smokehouses, sweet barbecue sauce on baby-back ribs, Manukahoneycomb, maple syrup and caramel soon emerged. The taste was full on –ashy, smoked fish, crispy seaweed, earthy, salted caramels, sticky ribs. Theaddition of water brought out pomegranate molasses, blackened pineapple, sweet leather and tobacco, burning herbs over pine, sweet & sour sauce, smoked gammon, caramelised ribs. Spicy to taste – green ginger, cloves withtobacco (Davidoff we were reliably informed), toasted marshmallows, Highlandtoffee, barbecue sauce, walnuts covered in honey and the ubiquitous lavender. From the Japanese owned distillery dating to 1779." Drinking Tip: "While re-reading a favourite old book." - $130.99

  7. SMWS 53.168: Elastoplast on a roasted tongue - 59.3% - 18 Year - Islay - Refill Sherry Butt - Outturn: 596 Bottles - Panel's Tasting Note: "All the usual smoky characteristics were there – TCP, elastoplasts, creosote, tar, and a bothy after the fire died – but we also got smokedalmonds, honey-glazed ham, sweet heather and perfumed soap. Thepalate was undoubtedly big, even tongue-roasting – sweet and salty withash, tar, kiln smoke, aniseed and liquorice allsorts. The reduced noseevoked spun sugar, pralines, rosemary, straw, coal scuttles and bonfires. The palate, even with a good splash of water, remained intense, withgood sweetness (caramel, syrup, Horlicks, honey-roasted carrots) andsome barbecued meat that fell in the ash, perhaps served withcaramelized onions. From Islay’s biggest distillery." Drinking Tip: "A barbeque dram perhaps? Takes quite abit of water." - $142.99
