Producer Note: "The cane plant, rum’s primary raw ingredient, is the natural source of its flavour. Thus the land on which it grows & its microclimate determines its character. Therefore we choose to explore the terroirs of Grenada - one place, one farm, at a time: captured here as fresh, vibrant spirit before cask ageing.
The southern most of our farms is nestled narrowly between the coastal road & marshy mangroves of Westerhall bay in front of its now ruined distillery. Here the moisture retentive soils, enriched by the legacy of coconut & cocoa trees, provides a fertile & verdant terroir. For this rum we harvested the sucrose-rich variety we call Clean Ester from River View Field, which stands on the terroir known as Old River.
The modern marvel that is the Renegade Rum distillery was designed precisely to extol this individuality, with extended temperature-controlled fermentation for intensity, & considered distillation for gravitas. We look to compare & contrast authentic flavours, terroir by terroir. It is presented pre-cask: as unaged, fresh cane juice spirit."

Renegade Etudes New Bacolet

Harvested in 2000, this pot still rum was made from "lacalome red" cane grown on the New Bacolet field which is south facing. The rum was bottled at 55% after maturing in 76% First Fill American Oak, and 24% Premium French Oak.
Mark Reynier is a restless man, after the sale of Bruichladdich, he opened an Irish Whiskey distillery focused on barley "téireoir". As if that wasn't daunting enough, he also decided to shake things up in the world of rum, opening the Renegade Distillery in Grenada. Renegade rums are made from pure cane juice, applying the same terroir-driven philosophy to rum!

"More rugged than nearby Old Bacolet, the natural amphitheatre of New Bacolet is a southerly-facing, steep-sided, sun-baked bowl with drought resistant cane on weathered upper slopes and lush growth on the deeper, rich colluvial soils below – a textbook exploration of terroir. For this rum we harvested the sucrose-rich variety we call Lacalome Red from the "Goat hill" field, which stands on the terroir known as Upper Combe.
"New Bacolet is enclosed and sheltered by a forest at its north, and slopes down towards the south. Being based along a mountainside, steeper than most of our farms, the excavation of the land was the most difficult. Four terroirs were identified over 10 acres, and we initially planted the varieties of Yellow Lady and Lacalome Red."

"On the coastal plain, a stone's throw south of the distillery, there is an intriguing terroir between mangrove and water meadow, with at its centre a distinctive bank of iron-rich volcanic laterite. Cane grows vigorously on this water-retentive soil, derived from Woburn & Perseverance Clays. For this rum we harvested the elegant variety we call yellow lady from the "grapefruit" field, which stands on the terroir known as Flats.
"With a slight elevation in reference to the coast, the air that washes across Pearls is cool. This, in conjunction with a swamp touching the base of the farm, allows for a rich maintenance of water-retained soil. Amidst the towering palm trees, Pearls has been planted with the varieties of Yellow Lady and Lacolome Red."
