Hansel Estate Chardonnay

In the 1970s Walter Hansel enlisted the help of his son Stephen to plant 257 Chardonnay vines. Throughout the 1980's the winery grew, as did the quality of the wine. It's still a relatively small winery but their Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs are now highly regarded and offer a Burgundian esthetic in a Sonoma setting. The Estate Chardonnay from Walter Hansel is one of the best showcases of what this winery can do with the grape. It avoids extreme oak and over-the-top flavour in exchange for balance, elegance and food-friendly compatibility.

The review: "The entry level 2015 Pétalos del Bierzo, their regional wine, in the new official category that will start working in the appellation from the 2017 vintage, a blend of many different vineyards planted with field blends, where the breakdown might come to some 5% white varieties (Valenciana/Doña Blanca, Godello and Palomino/Jerez) and around 1% other reds (Pan y Carne, Negrada and Gran Negro), all from vines ranging between 40 and 90 years of age on slopes (half of the grapes around the village of Corullón and the remainder in the rest of Bierzo). It's a showy, approachable, aromatic and open version of Pétalos, and as I tasted it later on in the season, it felt more polished and round, with a lush texture. Pedro Ximenéz Sherry is a rich dessert wine made from Pedro Ximenez grapes, hand-picked and dried in the sun before pressing. The sweet must is then fortified with grape spirit, before starting a careful ageing process. Intoxicating aromas of coffee, cream and toffee with delighful toasted notes. Felsina Chianti Classico Berardenga DOCG

Chianti Classico is the cornerstone of the estate’s production. The vineyards are located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the southeastern part of the Chianti Classico appellation, to the southeast of Siena. Almost exclusively with a southwestern exposure, they sprawl across ventilated slopes at an altitude ranging from 320-420 meters above sea level. Geologically, the terrains are mixed: in the higher parts the soil is predominantly rock quartz and calcareous Albanese mixed with alluvial pebbles; stratiform sandstone and loam characterize the vineyards on the edge of the Colli Senesi in the direction of the Crete Senesi. The first vintage was produced in 1967. 2019 was an exceptional vintage for the region, and it shows in the classic Chianti.

Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this process, the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste. Orval is one of the six Belgian Trappist breweries, a list that includes Westmalle, Westvleteren, Chimay, Rochefort, Orval and Achel. No other breweries are entitled by law to apply that name to their product.. The Notre-Dame d'Orval has a long history of distruction and reconstruction. The single beer they produce is probably the driest of the Trappist ales. They began brewing prior to the French Revolution, but that conflict was among the distructive events of the monestery's history.
