To celebrate the 2020 vintage, Goulée by Cos d’Estournel has been renamed G d’Estournel. In the 2020 vintage, the Merlot from the vineyard in the northern part of Médoc turned out as exceptional as it did at the flagship property of Cos d’Estournel. It saw more extreme weather conditions and less rain than Saint-Estèphe, but the vines being aged 35 years old on average, they were able to compensate thanks to their roots, which forever dig deeper from one year to the next, and the fresh air brought minerality from the nearby Gironde Estuary and ocean. The resulting wine displays a unique profile: the balance and aromatics of a fresh vintage are accompanied by an acidity and a quality of tannins usually observed in warmer vintages. G d’Estournel 2020, carried by the richness of the Merlot, is essentially delectable, and marked by notes reminiscent of salty sea breezes and a black pepper touch that lend it great energy.

Michel Mallard and Sons' vineyard is located in the commune of Ladoix-Serrigny, a small village at the junction between the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. She lives between London and Mendoza, and California (she is also an ER doctor at San Fransisco's busiest hospital). Alejandro Vigil has been Chief Winemaker of Bodega Catena Zapata since 2002, receiving the first 100-point score awarded to a South American wine by Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate (CZ River Stones 2016), and the highest rating ever given to a pure Cabernet Franc (Gran Enemigo Gualtallary 2013). Owners John and Virginia Weber both grew up in Southern Saskatchewan. Virginia worked as a nurse and John taught High School. Life settled and things were good until they met the Similkameen Valley in 2001. The desire to try something new, their love of wine and the beauty of the Similkameen convinced them to purchase a vineyard and move from Saskatchewan to Cawston. They quickly fell in love with the area and its burgeoning wine industry. Today they have 19 years of experience making wine in the region and produce some of the valley's best.
Spearhead Golden Retreat Pinot Noir

Spearhead Winery is located on the benchlands of South East Kelowna. Their focus is on premium quality wine produced from grapes from estate-grown vineyards and from selected Okanagan Valley vineyards. The hand-harvested grapes are sorted at the winery and fermented in small lots. They grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. Approximately 80% of 15 acres of vines is comprised of Pinot Noir including four different Dijon clones, 2 California heritage clones and Pommard. This combination of plantings enables their winemaker to select from the different characteristics exhibited by these clones to create a harmonious, complex Pinot Noir from our home vineyard. They also draw from several other vineyards in the Okanagan including Golden Retreat in Summerland and Coyote Vineyard in West Kelowna.
The vineyard and winemaking teams are led by Grant Stanley. A highly respected BC winemaker, Grant has been at the helm as Winemaker/General Manager for a few years now and he has transformed their winemaking program. His commitment to showcasing specific terroirs of the Central Okanagan Valley is evident in the ‘single vineyard’ program they have developed for Pinot Noir bottlings. These wines display the unique attributes of the Okanagan vineyards that they were sourced from. They also produce Pinot Noir blends which combine the characteristics of different vineyards, including their benchmark Cuvee.
Amrut Kurinji Single Malt

Kurinji was a neat little surprise when we were tasting our way through the Victoria Whisky Festival. Our good friend Ashok pulled this out and poured a dram, with a big smile on his face. It was easy to smile along. This is a ridiculously pretty little sipper. Easy going and very charming. The label says Batch 1, so hopefully we see more editions in the future.
