The brainchild of American wine distributor Marquis Sauvage, Burn Cottage was born with the purchase of a property in the Pisa region of Central Otago in 2002. Sauvage enlisted the help of Ted Lemon in establishing the biodynamically farmed vineyard and in making the wines, although the day-to-day winemaking is handled by Claire Mulholland, whose previous résumé includes stints at Martinborough Vineyards and Amisfield. The site includes ten different Pinot clones planted on five different rootstocks on a terraced northeast-facing slope. The Moonlight Race Pinot Noir is made from purchased fruit, but the other wines are all estate bottlings.
Tasting Notes: Wonderfully complex aromas of fern leaf, rhubarb, potpourri and rose petal contrast with more mineral notes of dust, graphite and gravel. The palate possesses a lovely sweet attack without ever becoming cloying and melts into supple, fine tannins which need a few years to completely marry to the wine. Nevertheless, the overall impression is silky and sensual. Excellent acidity lends great vibrancy to the palate and the wine ends on a long, lingering finish. There’s not much information to be found on this particular bottling, but it’s possible it’s Imported spirit, bottled for the Alberta market specifically. This soft, smoky, joven Espadin is a crisp and clean mezcal and is more well rounded and elegant than the Bruxo, with more earth-like notes along with slightly more tropical fruit.

Awamori is a rice based distillate similar to shochu, but drank mainly in Okinawa and a couple other countries, and is the base spirit for this gin. The fermented rice and koji are very noticeable as the base, and layered overtop are massive citrus notes, herbal green flavours, and hints of earthy black pepper.

Bunna 25 (or XXV, if you're hung on what the labels say) is an icon. It is unquestionably one of the most rich and elegant 25s on the market. Expect that salty oceanic tang we all know and love, but at the same time expect it to be well-tempered with gorgeous old sherry and deep fruitcake notes. While 'fruitcake' is a bit of a cheat when it comes to tasting notes, it's hard to argue in this case. And man...what a mouthfeel.

Nose: Scents of rich sherry, blossoming into sweet caramel and polished leather.
Palate: An initial taste of sweet berries and cream that evolves into a feast of roasted nuts and malt.
