Compass Box Spice Tree Extravaganza

This limited edition Compass Box release is inspired by Compass Box Spice Tree, but kicked up to the next level. The whisky is older with a heavier first fill sherry influence than the first edition, but still relies on Compass Box's proprietary hybrid casks and is bottled at 46%. The youngest whisky in the blend is 11 years, with the majority of the malt 13 and 19-20 years of age.
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Decadent and playful on the nose, you will find notes of sherry wine, dark berries and the fragrant sweetness of traditional sweet shops.
Palate: On the palate there is juicy red fruit, a dark brown sugar richness, the trademark Spice Tree ginger and clove spice character and an endlessly long, spicy, substantial finish.

Ultimately the peatiest ever release of Compass Box was produced from more than 70% Ardbeg with Caol Ila, Clynelish and a small parcel of French oak matured whiskies to round things out. Bottled at 48.9%.

"We came across a parcel of American oak barrels filled with mature, massively peaty single malt whisky - tarry and full of bonfire-like smokiness. To us, this was a whisky crying out to be tamed and shaped into a very special Compass Box limited edition.
"Even peatier than our whisky called ‘The Peat Monster’ - the staple peated Blended Malt Scotch Whisky in the Compass Box range - the resulting blend is massive in terms of the intensity and complexity of flavour; a whisky brimming with complex peatiness, but tempered with hints of fruit character and an underlying sweetness.

Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: rich, nutty, sherried and earthy; a gentle touch of peat perhaps, new leather sofas and candied fruits; cinnamon buns and Christmas cake.
Palate: rich, sherried and nutty with a beautiful oily profile; more candied fruits, dark chocolate, pipe tobacco and new leather; is there a touch of peat? I think so, but it is deft; layers of spice, bright orange and soft tropical fruits.
Finish: leathery and earthy with dry Oloroso and dark chocolate; the body vanishes more quickly the spices, sherry and fruits which last long!
Comment: nicely balanced; tastes old, but not ancient; very drinkable.

Producer Tasting Note: "On the nose: A soft touch of oloroso sherry, honey, warm toasted brioche, fresh, fine leather, warm cooked fruits, eucalyptus, soft hints of nutmeg, chrysanthemum, fine aged malt, aromas are well interwoven, almost no alcohol detected in the nose. On the palate: It starts with a very smooth and gentle sweetness, and then the spiciness kicks in, fine soft oak, gentle oloroso dryness, balanced whisky that tempts you to take a second glass with a lingering finish."
About Eiling Lim
"Lim 林" is my family name and in Chinese, it is defined as woods or forests. If you separate the family name into two, this character "木" means wood and wood is crucial in making a good cask.From a humble beginning of a young lady who enjoys her whisky to being the 1st independent bottler of scotch whisky in my home country Malaysia is quite a feat! It is beyond my wildest dreams. This has not been possible without the guidance and motivation from my family and my husband Luc Timmermans whom is a whisky connoisseur and collector as well as a "retired" independent bottler himself under the handwritten label, Thosop.
"Maybe it was fate that brought me to start my very own whisky adventure. After all, whisky has played an important part in my life at every level. I have met my husband if it was not for whisky and I would not have met so many wonderful friends in many parts of the world coming together for whisky. This is another stellar example of "probably ex-Edrington stock" blended malt Scotch whisky. We've seen a number of these, all of which taste a lot like a blend of sherry cask Macallan and Highland Park. But that is of course just speculation. No declared age, except that there is a declaration the whisky is Extra Old. Bottled at 44.2% from a single sherry butt.
Andrew’s Tasting Note
Nose: rich, sherried and leathery; jammy with loads of fruits: Sunrype Fruit Bars, strawberry and raspberry jam; bacon dipped in dark chocolate with a hint of sea salt.
Palate: dark chocolate sea salt caramel tarts, and chewy bacon dipped in chocolate; sweet pedro ximenez sherry and a touch of nuttier oloroso; subtle peat, Christmas cake, old leather and loose leaf tobacco.
Finish: rich, fruity and spicy; fading Christmas cake, gentle peat, sherry and sea salt infused chocolate.
Comment: another probably ex-Edrington stock blended malt; dangerously drinkable.
