Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 2012
$97.99
Bottled at 50%, this 6 year old heavily peated Bruichladdich, was produced from barley grown on 8 different Islay farms. Peated to 40PPM, the whisky was matured in 75% First Fill ex-American oak and 25% Second Fill French oak ex-Wine Casks.
Producer Description: "This high provenance, heavily-peated single malt was distilled from Islay-grown barley in 2012. A total of eight Islay farms came together to harvest the 2011 crop for Port Charlotte over a tempestuous summer. Each farmer had worked with us before, in Hunter Jackson, Ian Torrance, Ian MacKerrel, Raymond Fletcher, Mark French, Alistair Torrance, Raymond Stewart with father and son team Donald and Andrew Jones. Our community’s commitment to Islay is embodied here, where local barley is raised, distilled, matured and bottled only on Islay."
Bruichladdich Octomore 10.1
$144.99
We weren't expecting this before Christmas, but here it is! Produced from concerto Scottish barley, and distilled in 2013, at a phenolic level of 107PPM, the whisky was matured 5 years in ex-American oak casks. 59.8%.
Producer Description: "Distilled from Scottish barley in 2013, Octomore 10.1 is the benchmark of the 10s series. Deliberately stripped back to an ex- American oak maturation, aged just 5 years old, the .1 edition exposes the structure and presence of the Octomore spirit. Combining smoke with a modest maturation, this 10.1 first and foremost demonstrates the true potential of a considered, patient distillation."
Producer Tasting Note
Character: Lithe, supple, powerfully confident and a dram more than the sum of its parts. Slow trickle distillation is the hallmark of this muscular, oily spirit.
Aroma: Vanilla led, caramel, hints of smoke but tamed back. candied apple, gooseberry and marzipan.
Taste: Soft yet powerful and warming on the palate, peppery, barley sugar, smokey – dried earth and hints of rubber. Warm sand, sweetness of charred oak and pineapple.
Finish: Sweetness from tablet/fudge and a strong peat smoke and cold marine air combination.
Bruichladdich Octomore 10.3
$171.99
We weren't expecting this until the New Year, but lets just say Christmas has come early! Bottled at 61.3%, this 6 year old Octomore was produced from Concerto barley, grown on the Octomore Farm on Islay in 2012 and 2013. The barley was peated to 114PPM, and the spirit was matured exclusively in first fill ex-American oak whisky barrels.
Producer Description: "Distilled in 2013 from the 2012 harvest, the Octomore 10.3 has been brought home by farmer James Brown. Taking on the challenge of growing Islay Barley, he braces the conditions of the wet and wild west coast to combine an exploration of Islay terroir and stratospheric smoke. For the first time, the .3 is matured for six aged years but crucially only in ex-American oak. These top-quality casks have gently coaxed this Octomore spirit into life in Warehouse 16, next to our 10.1 edition. The components of our 10.1 and 10.3 are so similar, the distinct flavour difference must be owed to the barley’s respective growing location."
Producer Tasting Note
Character: Marine freshness, Islay air and a deep rooted level of fruitiness from the distillation characterise this release.
Aroma: Earthy peat smoke, dry and a little medicinal, lemon drops, and thyme come through and then marine, sea shell notes along with some vanilla and fudge from the oak.
Taste: Salt on the lips and more honey and lemon on the palate, then the peat sweeps in with the oak and heat from the high strength. Deeper flavours from the spirit, pear and gooseberry are more defined and richer.
Finish: Sweet on the finish initially with pastry and chocolate but then bitter notes of rubbery smoke and spice towards the end.

Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Clouds of pungent aniseed, menthol and eucalyptus are underscored with sweet notes of treacle toffee. Hints of peppermint, a frisson of fennel, and a mysterious camphorous scent in the far distance… With water, more toffee notes emerge with a burst of dry, earthy peat.
Palate: A tingly, peppery mouthfeel leads to a veritable explosion of intense, earthy, smoky notes – a nebular of bonfires, soot, charred oak, birch tar and menthol.
Finish: Unbelievably long, with layers of treacle toffee, aniseed, oak tannin, clove and just a hint of bittersweet, tangy Seville orange on the aftertaste.
Bruichladdich Black Art 7.1
$354.99
The 7th edition of Bruichladdich's Black Art Series is here. Distilled in 1994 and bottled after 25 years of age at 48.8%. It is Head Distiller Adam Hannet's third Black Art bottling, and only he knows the exact makeup of the casks used. 12,000 bottles released World Wide.
Producer Description: "Single malt whisky has the unique ability to capture and preserve a snapshot in time. This edition of our Black Art, 07.1, is symbolic of a moment in time that should not be forgotten. Signifying the end of an era, 1994 was the year Bruichladdich was closed for what could have been the last time."
Producer Tasting Notes
Nose: Unbelievable complexity, each cask that has played a role in maturing this whisky has a presence, the aromas lift from the glass in an almost orderly procession. First a rich marzipan, then walnut, crème caramel, turkish delight, hints of strawberry, violet, and coconut. There is a heavy fruit style with plum, poached pears, raisin and grapefruit and after opening further wood spice, nutmeg, toasted oak, roasted coffee beans, and muscovado sugar. An absolute delight to nose and discover the depth of flavour.
Palate: A little sharpness is a nod to the strength but quickly the satin texture covers the palate to give a viscous, round mouthfeel. The oak’s power and poise give a hint of dryness but also waves of coconut, Turkish delight, soft caramel, and spiced orange. The layers of oak and fruit that come through softly melt into one another; each sip brings a new level of discovery within this most complex of assemblages. While on the palate there appears less complexity than on the nose, an important balance, texture, and defined style serves to highlight the aromatic aspect of this whisky.
Finish: It seems that this whisky will go on forever, the incredible viscous texture of this whisky extends the finish and it lingers on the palate. Roasted nuts, then tropical fruit, baked pineapple, and butterscotch give a sweetness that is sure to be remembered.
Mood: As ever the mystery of its creation serves to intrigue. Black Art 07.1 gives a moment to reflect on the past and to welcome the possibilities of the future.

Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: thick with cocoa powder, puffed wheat squares, tobacco and Russian caramel; tarry with a touch of creosote; salty with Turkish coffee and Dutch licorice; cooked raisins, stewed prunes, fig jam and a touch of lightly-grilled Parma ham.
Palate: oh my God this is big, dark and brooding; Demerara sugars, leather, dark bakers chocolate, tar, creosote, Russian caramel, Turkish coffee, Dutch licorice and more... its all there; salty and moderately medicinal with crisp spices and leather. Sulphur? Maybe. Peat? Definitely, Laddie... maybe not... possibly Port Charlotte?
Finish: this one starts big and never really lets up; gorgeous finish if you aren't afraid of a little stank.
Comment: I love it... this is a crazy bottle of Bruichladdich; a large proportion of you will hate it; I suspect this is Port Charlotte or at least a more heavily peated batch of Bruichladdich; lots of debate in the shop over how sulphured it is; in my opinion it is not, or at least only slightly; so if you are a sulphur Nazi beware, if not chive on!
90pts Whisky Fun
"This from our great pals at Whiskybase. Will you be at their excellent Gathering festival in Rotterdam in October? If so then come find me and say hello. Serge has promised a few bottles of 1972 Brora for free pouring on my stand... Colour: deep amber. Nose: ooft! An usual profile that is simultaneously full of nervous, clean sherry, briny salinity and medical embrocations. Also lots of salted almonds, Maggi, tar, toasted walnuts, marmite and some kind of mix of espresso and seawater. Extremely potent and punchy stuff! With water: lots of soy sauce, more Maggi, black olives, cough mixtures, herbal bitters, balsamic and some pretty bitter chocolate. Mouth: if you blended tar, leather, black coffee, cola syrup, root beer and cherry cough medicine you might get some kind of mind-expanding smoothie that would resemble this. Despite all this medical potency and seashore bluster, the sherry remains pin sharp and clean throughout. Very impressive stuff! Some grizzly notes of black pepper, cured game meats and yet more tar! With water: beef stock based ramen with some chilli flakes, lots of sea salt, earthy black teas, salted liquorice and things like smoked paprika and jasmine. Finish: long, extremely meaty, herbal, sooty, camphory and medical. Comments: A world of difference from the Bere Barley; same quality! It’s to be wondered if this wasn’t from some of those lightly peated early batches distilled by the new ownership at the time? Either way, superb selection by the Archives team. SGP: 473 - 90 points."
Archives Ben Nevis 1996 53.5%
$309.99
Only 18 bottles are coming to KWM, semi-exclusively. Matured 22 years in a "Hogshead", this 1996 Vintage Ben Nevis was bottled at 53.5%. Bottled under "The Fishes of Samoa" line, the label features a Blackeye Thicklip Wrasse drawn by A. Bertrand overs 150 years ago. Scored 91pts with Angus for Whisky Fun.
Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: starts woody: polished oak pews, varnished pine and mahogany book shelves lined with dusty old books; linseed oil; underneath bright, vibrant tropical fruits and spicy tones: pineapple chunks in chili oil and mangoes springkled with black pepper; doughy with vanilla cake and chunky coconut icing.
Palate: big, round and fruity with loads of spicy and dry oaky tones; the oak and tropical fruits are at war, and the latter has the upper edge; more mango and pineapple, but also chili oil, cayenne and crack black pepper; as it settles down it becomes creamier and more decadent; it also develops a paraffin waxy character; the body is big, warm and coating.
Finish: long, warming and spicy with decadent tones and fading tropical fruits.
Comment: this is one of the most interesting Ben Nevis I've had recently--I almost typed Clynelish, in a Freudian slip; it is more curious than our recent SMOS cask, but not as elegant, IMHO; this is a Brilliant Clynelish, I mean Ben Nevis!
91pts Angus Whisky Fun
Colour: gold. Nose: whereas the first one had a more immediate and obvious fruitiness, here we’re rather on waxes, cereals and an almost Clynelishesque minerality. Chalky, notes of sandalwood, white flowers, heather, dried herbs. There’s even a very slight coastal element too along with things like petrol, putty, vapour rubs. Really excellent! With water: full of lovely notes of oily sheep wool, hessian, ink, fabric, pebbles, vase water, seashells and dried flowers. More medical, more fatty and more waxy with water, I love it. Mouth: Seriously, blind you could say this is an old Clynelish. Or even some old Cadenhead dumpy bottling due to these wee metallic and sooty touches it displays. Something extremely pure, old school and distillate dominated. Gets increasingly polished, waxy and sooty. More medicine too. With water: that slight grassy edge is fully developed now and there’s lots of overripe green fruits, baked banana, custard, lime cordial and elderflower. Hints of fennel seed and waxed canvas too. Finish: long, herbal, medical, waxy and slightly salty. Comments: I’m always looking for reasons to score whiskies down, or not to go to 90+ etc. However, this one is pretty indefatigable and unequivocally superb. This really could be some old full-bodied highland malt distilled in the early 60s. SGP: 562 – 91 points.
