"Gordon & MacPhail’s history with Strathisla goes back to the early 1900’s when owners John Urquhart and then his son, George, forged an enduring relationship with the Speyside distillery.
"Strathisla’s own history can be recorded as far back as 1786, where it began its life as the brewery of a local monastery. It is the oldest working distillery in the Scottish Highlands and was o riginally known as Milton Distillery. Its whisky spirit was long known as Strathisla after the river which it sits beside but th e distillery was only officially renamed Strathisla in 1951.
"This spirit for this ultra rare release was distilled on what is now known as Strathisla Distillery in Keith. A thorough investigation in consultation with Chivas revealed that the official distillery name in 1949 was in fact Milton changed to Strathisla in 1951. So to accurately reflect its true provenance, the release is being brought to market under its original name: Gordon & MacPhail 1949 from Milton Distillery.
"This unique release will never be repeated it represents a unique opportunity for drinkers and collectors to own a Milton single malt from the 1940s from the last cask in existence from Gordon & MacPhail’s revered warehouse in Elgin."

"Milton, or Strathisla as it is now known, has small copper stills with a distinctive shape that helps to give the spirit its character. The spirit style is rich, fruity and full bodied, therefore we have selected our own first fill Sherry puncheon, made to our exacting specifications, in which to mature this whisky.
"My grandfather, George, laid down the rich and robust spirit in 1949 and he knew from experience that it would be perfect for longer term maturation. We have carefully matured this cask for 72 years, assessing its progress down the decades. We now feel the whisky is finally ready certainly the oldest Milton ever bottled and one that will never be seen again."

One of the lost Speyside triplets (alongside Glen Albyn and Millburn), Glen Mhor may be most recognized for being one of the component malts used to recreate the Mackinlay's Rare Old Highland Malt (you know... the Shackleton recreation from a few years back). It is a distillery that has never had the romantic draw that other lost gems like Brora, Port Ellen, or Rosebank have, but we are now 40 years past the last spirit run at Glen Mhor and the very little we ever see is now always extravantly priced and packaged. And a bottling such as this one is exactly the reason why. 93 points on Whiskyfun (one of only two or three sources we trust almost implicitly) should tell you all you need to know. With an endorsement like that, there should be a bloodbath for the few bottles we're getting. Refill Sherry Hogshead #72 yielded only 174 bottles.

G&M Private Collection Benromach 1982

This 39 year old Private Collection Benromach, bottled just shy of 40 years, was matured 19 years in a Sherry Cask before finishing for a further 20 years in a Burgundy Hogshead. At 60.2%, it has held its strength too. A sister cask to this bottling, also finished in Burgundy, is rocking 91pts on Whiskybase.
Independent bottlings of Benromach are extremely rare, there have been less than a dozen in the last 20 years, and a good chunk of them were by the distillery's owner Gordon & MacPhail. So why bottle a bunch of 39 year old Burgundy finished Benromachs (there appear to be at least 3) under Gordon & MacPhail? I suspect it is because these whiskies fall outside of the style the distillery is going for, and they didn't want to confuse these with the recent 40 year old releases, which have a more traditional style.

Part of the Contrasts range from Benromach Distillery, this bottling is one of a duo of limited editions focusing on two different ways of drying, or seasoning, the oak that is used to make the barrels. The Air Dried Oak - Virgin Oak Cask Matured was distilled in 2012 and put into oak barrels that were air-dried for three years before being used. This resulting whisky was bottled in 2023 after 10 years at 46%.

At 38 years this is one of the oldest bottlings of Glenburgie we've ever seen. Distilled in 1983 and filled into a Refill American Oak Hogshead, the whisky has been bottled at 45.2%. I smell a future tasting coming!
