Old Ballantruan is a peated version of Tomintoul single malt, named for the distillery's spring. With a peat spec at an impressive 55ppm for the malt, this should be a must-try for peated whisky fans. The first issue of this whisky with the 10-Year-Old age statement was launched in 2012. It is bottled at 50%.

Andrew's Tasting Note:
Nose: soft and creamy with peaty, firm smoke, caramel and white fruits; there are some hard candies, malt and some minty top notes.
Palate: big and creamy, honey and more hard candies (fruit to anise) with muddy earthy smoke, more mint and lots of malt.
Finish: long, coating, creamy and toasty with fading floral smoke.
Comments: surprisingly Ardbegian.

One of Scotland's most beloved whiskies, this 10 year old highlights the distillery's peaty provenance. Although technically the most peated full time production whisky in Scotland, the distilleries stills and spirit-purifier gives this malt a softer edge than might be expected. It has been bottled at 46% without colouring or chill-filtering.

The 2nd Edition in The Signature Series from Arran, which is planned to span four releases in total. Barrel Bonfire showcases and embraces the Lochranza Distillery's batches of peated spirit. The 42ppm malt was distilled in and filled into ex-Bourbon Barrels in 2012. It was transferred into ex-Koval Distillery quarter casks that previously matured Bourbon in September of 2018. The result was bottled in early 2024 at 50% ABV.
Producer Description
"Over the course of the secondary maturation, the intensity of the heavily peated whisky has taken on an even more complex and full-bodied character. The smaller the size of cask, the greater the surface contact area between the wood and the spirit, effectively creating an environment for ‘express’ maturation. The resulting whisky has the benefit of more intense flavours which add depth and greater nuance to the final dram. Smokier notes mingle with the well-loved charred citrus and sweet vanilla spices of Arran Single Malt, evoking a bonfire made from barrel staves."

One of the truly singular Scottish single malt whiskies, Talisker boasts a character unlike any other and is almost instantly recognizable in any of its forms. The distillery, only a dozen years away from its 200th anniversary, is known worldwide for its moderate level of peat and smoke, but more famously for the rich pepper/chili notes and briny seaside flavors that run through the DNA of all the malt produced there. Some whiskies require lengthy maturation to hit full stride. Talisker is one that not only shines in youth but actually showcases its brightest characteristics in its early years. The 10 year old is undoubtedly a special whisky but is approachable enough to be a go-to in the rotation.
