A beautiful 100% Syrah from Yves Cuilleron, one of the Rhone Valley's leading winemakers and an all-around fascinating guy, whose family has been making wines in France since the 1920s. Here's what Robert Parker Jr. has to say about him: "Cuilleron is a brilliant white wine maker, but he also displays a deft touch when it comes to making elegant, supple, pure, attractive reds." That's this wine in a nutshell — pure, attractive, beautiful, with potential for aging or just enjoy it now. The name Bassenon comes from a nearby stream; Cuilleron established his Cote Rotie vineyards in the early 1990s and the first vintage of this wine was released in 1994.

The vineyards, situated in the Gros de Montpellier terroir that lie halfway up the slope between the Mediteranean and the mountains of the Languedoc, have been the property of the Serviere family since 1830. Well, history is nice but what about now? We can tell you that the Serviere familiy also makes delicious Viognier. This one has a lovely fragrant nose reminiscent of small honeyed flowers. Lush with a nice oily mouth-feel. Nice lift of banana and citrus.
