The Grants of Glenfarclas distillery have handcrafted their exceptional single malts for more than 170 years. No corners are cut at Glenfarclas. Even though it is much more expensive, and hard to procure, their focus is still on European oak. Founded in 1836, Glenfarclas is the second oldest family owned distillery. In 2006 industry insiders voted it "Distiller of the Year" for "being consistently good and staying true to its core values."
Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: peach crumble, decadent vanillans, oranges, mango and canned pineapple; soft spices, earthy-oaky tones and a hint of pine.
Palate: big, rich and very fruity; layers of spices, fruit and balanced oak; more peach crumble, flambéed banana, pineapple and mango; it tastes old, antique-y: like opening an old book with a sherry in a soft leather armchair.
Finish: long, fruity and rich; the layers continue long into the finish.
Comment: not as heavily sherried as I remember older vintages to have been, but more subtle, layered and complex; a beautiful old malt.
Distiller's Tasting Note
Nose: warm, spicy sherry oak notes dominate.
Palate: sherry notes continue, candied fruit and spices with a warm buttery back bone.
Finish: vanilla, cream and pie fruits.
