A stalwart classic Speyside single malt, from one of Scotland's oldest family owned distilleries. Matured in Ex-Sherry and bottled at 46%.

Andrew's Tasting Note

Nose: nutty, leathery and earthy; walking through damp old dunnage warehouses in wet leather boots; a touch of burn bacon, dried dark fruits, wet jujubes and bitter choclate.

Palate: muscular, malty, honeyed and very sherried; big nutty Oloroso notes, wet leather, dark spices: (clove, fennel, Dutch licorice); more Jujubes, slightly urnt bacon and musty old oak in a dunnage warehouse; some orange and melon beneathm but the sherry is running roughsod; bitter chocolate on the palate too.

Finish: long, leathery, nutty and very sherried; loads of dark spices, drying as it fades.

Comment: this has always been a sherry bomb and a beast of a whisky, darker and spicier than I recall, but it has been a while; and it might be my palate too, saved half the bottle to revisit it tomorrow.

Evan’s Tasting Note

Nose: Sticky toffee pudding, raisins and dates, fresh out of the oven apple pie, fruit leather, Christmas cake, along with floral and spicy tobacco notes. A potpourri of what sherry cask influenced malt can give you.

Palate: Rich and spicy but also balanced. Full of flavour: dried cranberries and cherries, raisins, nutmeg, candied apple, a touch of Terry’s Chocolate Orange, and some Christmas cake again.

Finish: Nice, lengthy sherried finish. Warms you up as it goes down. The spices fade to the background but the toffee and dried fruit flavours linger.

Comment: For all of my love for Glenfarclas, the 15 is typically not one of my favourites in the line as I tend to go for the 17-year-old more style-wise. That being said, I definitely enjoyed it this time around. It is rich and sherried with great spice upfront, yet still manages to be elegant and not over-the-top.

Established in 1836, this family-owned distillery has remained independent for over 160 yrs. Benefitting from the cold, clear springs of the Ben Rinnes river, this distinctly traditional Speyside malt is well known for its mellow flavor, and is made in batches rather than continuously to ensure high quality standards. Considered by connoisseurs to be among the best Speysiders available. Sweet, rich and very intense. Full bodied and smooth with hints of burnt peat. Long and distinguised finish.
