Their vineyards are situated in the sub-regions of Seppeltsfield, Marananga and Moppa located along the Barossa Valley’s western edge and are some of the oldest vines in the world. Thin, sandy loam topsoils lie sparsely scattered over ancient deposits of bluestone, marble stone, limestone, quartz and ironstone. Rainfall is limited, often to less than 400 millimetres a year falling through winter and early spring. Subsurface clay retains valuable moisture, sustaining the vines through the long, warm and dry summers and autumns. The perfect, low-disease-pressure conditions in which to grow small, healthy bunches of compact, flavour-packed berries.

Two Alices' are better than one! Alice's vineyard and the Shiraz it grows takes its name a mother and an aunt of Greenock Creek's owners Annabelle and Michael Waugh: Annabelle's mom and Michael's favourite aunt. Alices Shiraz is one of the iconic big reds in Greenock Creek's portfolio and is also the winery's largest vineyard with a total area of 15 acres. The vines on the site were planted in 1997.

Another Rockford knock-out wine! The blend is 55-45 with Shiraz at the forefront, but the Cabernet imparts a dusty, minty note with a lingering finish, buffered by plenty of ripe cherry flavours from the Shiraz. Rockford Wines features high-quality traditional wines made from some of the best old Barossa vineyards. The winery and cellar door sales are part of a paved courtyard surrounded by stone buildings dating back to the early settlement of Krondorf. Founder and winemaker Robert O'Callaghan is a legend among Aussie winemakers and his wines have had a profound influence on winemaking philosophy and wine style in the Barossa. In addition to the small home vineyard, Rockford works in partnership with several independent wine growers around the Barossa, with vineyards in Kalimna, Ebenezer, Moppa Springs, the Eden Valley and central Barossa. This gives Rockford a wide variety of soil types, mesoclimates and altitudes for its grapes. Many of the vines are planted on their own rootstocks and range between 60–100 years old, giving intense, concentrated grapes that transform the wines. Winemaking is largely done using traditional methods such as basket presses, open-topped concrete fermenters and a 1880s Bagshaw (grape) crusher that was found on site when O'Callaghan purchased the property in the 1970s. This Cabernet is built for the long haul, give it a good decant if you want to drink it now.
