This 23 year old Springbank was finished in an ex-Bourbon Barrel, after starting out in Sherry & Madeira. It has been bottled at 48.9%.
Producer Note
"From a vatting of Sherry and Madeira butts, this Springbank was distilled in November 1996 before resting in an American bourbon barrel specifically for our USA Series."
500ml mlAndrew's Tasting Note
Nose: classic mature Springbank, oily, funky, and fruity with a touch of smoke and salt; lightly salted caramel, subtle peat smoke, a touch of latex, and clean engine oil; loads of dried dark fruits and decadent spices, underneath a blanket of soft creamy vanilla.
Palate: silky delivery of fruit, funk, spices, and tamed buttery old peat; round, creamy, and savoury with building clean smoke; still funky, with a touch of latex, and figs in honey; flourless dark chocolate cake with pink peppercorns; the leather and tobacco firm up with oak spices; faint tropical tones struggle out from under the weight of Bourbon, Sherry, and Madeira...
Finish: ashy, and leathery, with more buttery peat, salted caramel, dark fruits, and firm spices.
Comment: 'finishing' has become almost a dirty word with some Anoraks; but this is a fine example of taming what might otherwise have become an over-the-top malt if left to mature longer in fresh Sherry & Madeira; in all a very unique, but still excellent Springbank, with many of the hallmarks which make it so sought after; it will take you half a bottle to get to really know it, and by then you'll wish you had another in reserve!
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Ooft! Complex, with hard rubber, phenolics, tar, fir resin, tobacco, leaf mulch, truffle oil. Hints of tea tree oil and bung cloth hessian.
Palate: Lovely dark fruits, big chocolate notes, rancio, and a touch of camphor, menthol, and seasalt. Bitter chocolate, and a cellar/dunnage earthiness comes through in the long finish.
That Boutique-y Whisky Company (TBWC) is part of the Atom Group, which also owns the UK retailer Master of Malt and a number of other subsidiaries. They are a dynamic and innovative firm, who by example invented the Whisky Advent Calendar concept. Established in 2012, TBWC is famous for its playful and colourful labels, which often feature prominent whisky industry figures, tell a story, and or elude to an inside joke. The labels are typically laced with hidden elements and "Easter Eggs."
TBWC bottles whiskies from around the world, though the bulk of their offerings are of Scottish origin. Most of their offerings are small-batch releases, Blended Malts, and Blends. Their "Head of Whisky" is Canadian Sam Simmons.
We are big fans of not only their whimsical labels but also the consistently high standard of liquid they bottle.
