Bottled as part of Gordon & MacPhail's Recollection Series, this 1975 vintage Convalmore was filled into a Refill American Oak Hogshead, where it matured for 46 years before bottling at 47.8%. Only 138 bottles. 92pts Whiskybase
An extinct distillery, one known for its waxy distillate. Convalmore was shuttered for good in 1985 and sold to William Grant & Sons, who wanted the land as it abutted the properties of Glenfiddich and Balvenie.
700 ml Low StockAndrew's Tasting Note
Nose: nutty, decadent, and toasty, with tangy fruits; almond brittle and beer nuts; mince meat pie, heavy on the orange peel, right out of the oven; Caramilk, cocoa nibs, and Big Turk; cinnamon French toast, and almond paste filled croissants dusted in brown sugar.
Palate: thick, sweet, and rich, with tangy fruits and chocolate treats; more beer nuts, almond brittle, and we'll add some dark chocolate macadamia nut cookies to the mix; Caramilk, Big Turk, and Cuban Lunch candy bars; more mince meat pie, still warm from the oven, baked in a buttery pie crust; grilled pineapple, poached pear with blue cheese, and baked apples on the fruit side of things; Demerara sugars and crips oak spices.
Finish: tangy fruits, candied nuts, firm oak spices, and chocolate candy bars galore; it gets better with every sip.
Comment: sublime stuff that doesn't disappoint; first Convalmore we've seen, let alone tasted in a couple of years!
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Orange sherbet and lemon peel give way to subtle notes of rhubarb. Rose petal aromas develop with lime bitters and mature oak.
Taste: Lemon drizzle cake flavours combine with orange oil and toasted almonds. Honeysuckle gives way to a soft herbal note and brown sugar.
Finish: Full and creamy finish with lingering citrus and vanilla pod.
