There are definitely not enough cool expressions of Bruichladdich hitting our shores lately. And worse still, there are even fewer naked Laddies out there. (Those not draped in the richness of wine casks, that is.) Not that those ones can't be fun, but ex-Bourbon is where you really see the soul of a distillery. Fortunately, Bruichladdich really shines when left to its own devices. This is probably the most exciting of the recent R&BT range, but we should warn you that the outturn from barrel #1433 was a mere 154 bottles. They won't last long.
Natural colour, non-chill filtered, and bottled at 52.1% abv. Although it is not explicitly mentioned, there is a connection between Mark Reynier, and the Rest & Be Thankful Whisky Co. This link goes back to the days when Mark was the mastermind behind the scenes of Bruichladdich's revival, and it followed him to Ireland and the establishment of the Waterford Distillery. Are these Mark's personal casks? Could be...!

Nose: thick with white chocolate, honeycomb, and comté; dried apricots, grilled pineapple, a touch of ozone, and salted caramel ice cream; increasingly decadent and creamy with time, creamsicles and jelly bellies.
Palate: everything I was hoping for and more... more white chocolate, honeycomb, salted caramel ice cream, jelly bellies, creamsicles and and comté; the malt and classic Laddie funk make their presence felt, adding an oily body and a coating minerality; the oak is balanced, toasty, and subtly spicy; starting to go tropical, though a bit underripe!
Finish: fresh, coating, and toasty, with more decadence, cheesy funk, and soft fruits.
Comment: this is a gorgeous mid-teens Bruichladdich, balanced, elegant, and tasty, with lots of layers; a classic!

Finglassie is what the Inchdairnie distillery calls their peated stocks. We've only seen one or two of them so far - Inchdairnie was only founded in 2015 - so it's hard to say what the distillery profile will be, but it was probably a smart decision to release this is a small batch bottling, as opposed to single cask releases. We're probably getting a closer approximation of what we can expect in future releases. The peated ones, anyway.
This 5-year-old was matured in ex-Islay Bourbon casks (so...introducing a bit of the Islay style of peat perhaps?), and finished in ex-Oloroso butts.

Exciting to see another indie Laddie. They are, unfortunately, few and far between. Ex-Bourbon matured, and bottled at 20 years old. 161 bottles.

Unquestionably one of the most exciting and challenging whiskies on the market, Port Charlotte commands attention in all its guises. In fact, there's a part of me that wishes Bruichladdich would ditch the other ranges and produce Port Charlotte full time, but I suppose variety is also a good thing. Unfortunately, heavy demand on the distillery's stocks means that it is exceedingly rare to see PC beyond 10 years of age. Thankfully we have indie bottlers like Rest & Be Thankful, who are the only ones giving us higher age statement Port Charlotte expressions. This single cask (#1577) appears to be full term maturation in an ex-wine hogshead. At cask strength, this should be a real rollercoaster of flavours. Look for sweetness, big smoke, and a whole lot of farmyard in a bottle.

Single cask, cask strength, Port Charlotte. Hell yeah. After nearly two decades in an ex-wine hogshead, our friends at Rest & Be Thankful were able to get just 222 bottles of this one. Expect the wine to deliver some sweet, sour, and savoury notes to Port Charlotte's smoky, coastal, and farmy stylings. We're itching to try this one, because let's face it...19 year old Port Charlotte is as rare as hen's teeth.
