Superb young example of just how versatile the spirit is that flows off the stills at Zuidam. These folks have worked in countless styles and it never ceases to amaze how well some of their more 'out-there' ideas turn out. Case in point: "Special #25", a peated white port-casked single malt. Distilled in 2018 and bottled in 2022 at 4 years of age. Trust us, it didn't need more. If you're looking for something new in peated whisky, try this.

Curt's Tasting Note
Nose: Yuzu, and all sorts citric notes. Ammonia, or Dettol, maybe. Oranges and red plum. Lime zest and chilis. A clean peat smoke that reminds a tick of Kilchoman. Anise. Honeydew melon. Chamois. Hints of Andrew's agave drink of choice: Mezcal-ritas.
Palate: Oh, wow. Nice young, peppery peat. Black licorice, salt water, and a very unexpected charred white fish note. Grilled fruits. A slight almond character that suggests its age. Genever.
Finish: Very slow ebb of all that was on the palate. Honeydew, oak, smoke. Genever.
Thoughts: Very well done wine casking. Bright and fresh style. Makes me want more.

Produced by the Zuidam family distillery in Baarle-Nassau, Netherlands, this peated Millstone single malt whisky was aged entirely in PX Solera Sherry Casks. Bottled in small batches at 46% ABV.
Evan's Tasting Note
Nose: Rich Sherry notes along with wood and spice notes. Cloves, juniper, star anise, gingerbread, trail mix with raisins and walnuts, maple syrup, and an underlying potpourri and wood smoke.
Palate: The peat comes out more on the palate, with sweet notes from the PX Sherry and a lot of nuttiness. Toasted almonds, walnuts, dates, maple syrup again, earthy tobacco, fruit leather, amaretto, Frangelico, black licorice and Montreal steak spice.
Finish: The earthy smoke from the peat and nutty notes from the sherry linger together nicely.
Comment: This is big sherry with a decent amount of smoke, but very approachable. The spice notes and the smoke keep the PX Sherry influence from going overly sweet and decadent, which is surprising. This could have been over the top, but it finds a nice balance.
