From the Artist Collective 5.0 by La Maison du Whisky, this 11 year old Benrinnes was distilled in 2010 and was finished in a 1st Fill Sherry Butt. 87pts Whiskybase. 48%.

"Intimately linked to each other by a skillfully braided malty link, the three stages of the tasting of this remarkable Benrinnes nevertheless constitute entities in their own right. Thus, the intensely floral character of the nose and the abundantly fruity temperament of the mouth precede a marvelously chocolatey, roasted and spicy finish which also shines with its maturity and freshness of expression."

Nose: aerial, elegant. Absolutely remarkable, the first nose reveals notes of marmalade, rose petal, mauve lilac and very ripe mango. Allowed to breathe, the nose becomes spicy (pepper, clove), camphorated and even more floral (freesia, hyacinth, lime blossom). Gradually, candy sugar and a thin layer of caramel cover the surface of the aromatic palette. Apricots and quince jelly come as a high point.
Palate: racy, full of liveliness. Starting exactly where the nose left off, the attack on the palate also reveals the beauty of a limpid and fruity distillate (pear, kirsch). In the mid-palate, flavors of frangipane, cocoa and tobacco spread harmoniously around the palate. In the aftertaste, red fruits (raspberry, strawberry) compete in intensity with squares of dark chocolate.
Overall: long, fluffy. Very slightly tannic, the start of the finish is marked by notes of prune, toast and beeswax. Dusted with nutmeg and chocolate chips, the finish also evokes a very high quality red tea. Radiant with herbaceous freshness, the retro-olfaction returns to the tobacco notes in the mid-palate (burning Havana cigar). The empty glass is malty, roasted (coffee, tonka bean) and resinous (cedar, cedar).

Cut/Point is an exciting new addition to the indie bottling game. The fine gent who launched this brand is not only a Keeper of the Quaich and long time whisky industry demi-god, he's also a local boy with his finger on the pulse 'round thses parts. In other words...Cut/Point may be new, but it's also already an old soul, and one that is easy to put stock in.
Benrinnes is a very hit or miss malt most of the time, but this particular cask is a real fireworks show. Cereal-forward with just enough cask influence to rein in the spirit. Refreshingly, left to be naked. It's a boozy, swaggering little beast in a style we don't see enough of. A bit challenging, and very retro.
Cask number 307387 was an ex-Bourbon Hogshead that yielded 298 bottles at 57.4%.

Gilles Dumangin doesn't make things easy on himself when he wraps his whiskies in wine. He has a habit of stacking the deck against himself by picking distilleries that boast some of the most challenging profiles in all of Scotch Whisky: Benrinnes, Ardmore, Fettercairn, Craigellachie. These aren't exactly the most mild-mannered of malts. It's a testament to the man's craft. I love the whole 'if you're going to swing, swing for the fences' mentality.
This Benrinnes spent 10 years in a Refill Hogshead before 23 months in Ratafia Champenois.

Redwood Empire's Emerald Giant Rye is bottled in California but given it's Mash Bill of 95% Rye and 5% Malted barley it is likely sourced from MGP's Distillery in Indiana. This is not a bad thing as this distillery is responsible for some of the best Rye Whiskey around. This bottle takes its name from a Redwood tree that goes by the same moniker. The tree is 359 feet tall and about 1180 years old. The Whiskey is a blend of 3-5 year old Rye Whiskey bottled at 45%.
Based in Sonoma County, Redwood Empire Whiskey was established in 1998. The company has made a bit of a name for itself with its finesse at blending whiskey from different sources. Redwood maintains a promise to plant a tree for every bottle of their Whiskey sold.
