Boutique-y James E Pepper Bt.1 3 Year

American Bourbon and Rye doesn't quite age in dog years compared to Scotch Whisky. At the same time, 3-year-old Rye Whiskey isn't hyper young by American Whiskey standards either. This James E Pepper 3-Year-Old Rye was originally sourced by that company from MGP of Indiana, then eventually bottled by That Boutique-y Whisky Company. Somewhere in between all of this, the Rye Whiskey spent time in ex-Oloroso sherry casks. Bottled at 50% with a total of 1622 bottles in Batch 1.

Producer Description: "Our first batch from J.E. Pepper is a 3 Year Old Rye Whiskey, a release of just 1,622 bottles at 50.0% abv. This is a 3 Year Old Rye Whiskey that has been finished in an Oloroso Sherry cask The Pepper family brand of whiskey is an iconic Kentucky whiskey brand initially produced during the American Revolution and continued through to 1958."

About the Label (Larger Label Under the Tasting Note)

"Our label is set in an old school soda float shop, where distillery owner Amir Peay is pointing to a barrel shaped soda fountain that pertains to the finish style of our whiskies. Did you notice the four large mason jars labelled Corn, Rye, Barley, More Rye, amongst the shelves of lots of yummy colourful sweets?"

Andrew's Tasting Note

Nose: thick and syrupy; licorice jujubes, Goodies, candied fennel and smoked maple syrup; a touch musty with nutty sherry tones and German rye bread.

Palate: more German rye bread, Goodies and licorice Jujubes, candied fennel too; smoked maple syrup, nutty sherry, leather and tobacco.

Finish: long, drying, spicy and earthy; surprisingly approachable for a 3 year old.

Comment: I had very low expectations prior to it being featured in a Boutique-y whisky tasting this Spring; I was so impressed I grabbed a bunch of cases for the store; this is a rich and complex rye, beautifully fused with sherry; drinks great on its own, but would also make a baler Sazerac!

Producer Tasting Note

Nose: Toasted oats, barley and sticky dates

Palate: A flood of sweetness, followed by cinnamon, cloves and warming spices

Finish: Spices fade away to a buttery, creamy flavour

That Boutique-y Whisky Company (TBWC) is part of the Atom Group, which also owns the UK retailer Master of Malt and a number of other subsidiaries. They are a dynamic and innovative firm, who by example invented the Whisky Advent Calendar concept. Established in 2012, TBWC is famous for its playful and colourful labels, which often feature prominent whisky industry figures, tell a story, and or elude to an inside joke. The labels are typically laced with hidden elements and "Easter Eggs."

TBWC bottles whiskies from around the world, though the bulk of their offerings are of Scottish origin. Most of their offerings are small-batch releases, Blended Malts, and Blends. Their "Head of Whisky" is Canadian Sam Simmons.

We are big fans of not only their whimsical labels but also the consistently high standard of liquid they bottle.
