Call it Balfiddich, Glenvenie or Burnside... when you teaspoon Balvenie, or any single malt for that matter, you can't refer to the distillery by name. Even if they say they teaspooned the cask, and actually didn't. Confused? This is basically Balvenie with possibly a drop of another single malt blended in (likely Glenfiddich or Kinninvie).

Producer Description: "Our third batch of this ‘teaspooned’ Speyside whisky is an 18 Year Old, a release of just 1,049 bottles at 47.3% abv. There are only five classifications allowed in Scotch Whisky; Single Malt, Single Grain, Blended Malt, Blended Grain, and Blended Scotch. ‘Teaspooning’ was introduced in the 1980’s by William Grant & Sons." (Andrew adds: "who happen to own Balvenie!")

About the Label (Larger Label Under the Tasting Note)

"Similar to our Blended Malt #3, and #4, this is hardly a blended malt at all. Our label shows a congregation of whisky enthusiasts honouring the spoon. They really love that spoon. It’s almost exclusively Speyside single malt from a very popular distilleries that’s been ‘teaspooned’ All hail the spoon!"

Andrew's Tasting Note

Nose: fresh and fruity with cracked nuts and orchard fruits; subtly oaked, with honey and agave nectar; apricot jam and slightly under-rype mango.

Palate: soft, silky and floral with a base of juicy malt and a backbone of firm oak; more honey and agave nectar before it morphs into apricot jam, melons, baked apple and mango salsa; still nutty and toasty, but yielding.

Finish: juicy, fruity and decadent with more honey and agave nectar; the finish is medium in length with a nice weight and lots of layers.

Comment: this is a quintessential summer sipper, perfect for the patio, the lake, or a cult gathering to worship the "teaspoon"; whether it is Balfiddich or Glenvenie matters not, it is lovely, layered and eminently quaffable stuff!

Producer Tasting Note

Nose: Bright punchy tropical fruits lead, with pear drops, and fresh white grapes following.

Taste: Zesty lemons, a pinch of pepper and a citrus fizz.

Finish: The citrus flavours add to the crisp finish. There’s more grape and a lingering taste of hops.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company (TBWC) is part of the Atom Group, which also owns the UK retailer Master of Malt and a number of other subsidiaries. They are a dynamic and innovative firm, who by example invented the Whisky Advent Calendar concept. Established in 2012, TBWC is famous for its playful and colourful labels, which often feature prominent whisky industry figures, tell a story, and or elude to an inside joke. The labels are typically laced with hidden elements and "Easter Eggs."

TBWC bottles whiskies from around the world, though the bulk of their offerings are of Scottish origin. Most of their offerings are small-batch releases, Blended Malts, and Blends. Their "Head of Whisky" is Canadian Sam Simmons.

We are big fans of not only their whimsical labels but also the consistently high standard of liquid they bottle.
