We haven't seen official bottlings from Sweden's Mackmyra Distillery in a few years, but independent bottlings... this is our second in as many years! So still rare, but cool none the less.
Producer Description: "Our second batch from Sweden’s Mackmyra distillery is a 5 Year Old, a release of just 250 bottles at 50.3% abv. The Mackmyra distillery was founded in 1999. They built a second distillery in 2012, and since April 2013 all distillation has taken place at the new distillery."
About the Label (Larger Label Under the Tasting Note)
"This label is set deep in the forests of Sweden. In the foreground is Angela D’Orazio – their head distiller, styled like one of the elves from lord of the rings (complete with a tiara, and the elf-ears) There is a small trug full of cloudberries sitting beside a 100 litre cask that’s outside the Bodås mine. Once an iron ore mine, and now one of Mackmyra’s main warehouses. The cloudberries have been removed on this label and corn cobs lie by the base of the tree."

Nose: fresh, fruity and floral; elderflower liqueur, damp jujubes and agave nectar; vanilla, delicate spice, juicy malt and suble gravel-y minerality.
Palate: soft, toasty and floral with more juicy malt and sweet fruity tones; elderflower liqueur, jujubes, mango and pineapple; still a touch mineral with late decadent spice.
Finish: light, fresh, fruity and decadent with good length; lush and coating.
Comment: this is a perfect summer sipper, light and fruity but layered; don't let a bit of not-Scotch snobbery get in between you and this bottle... you'll regret it!
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Bubblegum was my first impression! It’s very sweet. The aromas are light, and the sweet shop continues with foam shrimp. Lightly toasted bread, oak, and vanilla follow along with notes of dry summer grasses
Palate: Hints of vanilla, caramel and honey, slowly developing notes of exotic fruit; papaya,
and some toasted bread.
Finish: A sweet and spicy finish, that turns dry with oak tannins.
That Boutique-y Whisky Company (TBWC) is part of the Atom Group, which also owns the UK retailer Master of Malt and a number of other subsidiaries. They are a dynamic and innovative firm, who by example invented the Whisky Advent Calendar concept. Established in 2012, TBWC is famous for its playful and colourful labels, which often feature prominent whisky industry figures, tell a story, and or elude to an inside joke. The labels are typically laced with hidden elements and "Easter Eggs."
TBWC bottles whiskies from around the world, though the bulk of their offerings are of Scottish origin. Most of their offerings are small-batch releases, Blended Malts, and Blends. Their "Head of Whisky" is Canadian Sam Simmons.
We are big fans of not only their whimsical labels but also the consistently high standard of liquid they bottle.
