The big, bold 2022 vintage of the Ribbon Vale Merlot consists of 86% Merlot and 7% each of Cab Sauv and Cab Franc. The wine was matured in 228 litre French Oak Barrels (21% new) for a total of 26 months before bottling.
This Merlot is from Moss Wood's second vineyard called Ribbon Vale. They purchased the vineyard in March 2000. The vineyard was already in production, but it did offer a new challenge for Moss Wood in that they had never worked with Merlot before, and it ended up being quite different from the other grapes they were used to. Since then, they have focused on vineyard management and the way they produce the wine, and it's evolved into something special.

Winery Tasting Note (2022 Vintage)
Nose: Lifted primary aromas of raspberry, dark cherry, licorice, dark jubes, fruit leather, tamarillo, Tabasco, violets, musk and stewed plum. Background notes of dried roses, dried herbs, earth, cedar, tar, cinnamon, olive tapenade, mushroom, toasty oak, fresh baked fruit bread and some charry, toasty oak.
Palate: The wine is medium to full bodied, with generous red and black fruit flavours, consisting of blackberry, raspberry, boysenberry, strawberry, musk, plum, cherry, fruit leather, star anise and cinnamon. Lifted acidity gives it vibrancy, and tannins are quite concentrated, almost dusty and gravelly in texture and there is subtle vanilla and toasty oak on the finish.
Cellaring:
The 2021/22 season has much in common with 2008, as both shared a warm summer followed by the early onset of a mild autumn, allowing the fruit to ripen gradually and retain more lifted fragrances. With this in mind, we’re very confident of the aging potential of 2022 Ribbon Vale Merlot and encourage cellaring for at least 10 years, to allow some bottled aged complexity. However, full maturity will need at least another decade and we anticipate the wine reaching its peak around 25 years of age.

Amy's Red Blend from Moss Wood is both a customer and staff favourite at Kensington Wine Market. Vintage after vintage, this Bordeaux-style blend punches well above its price point. The 2024 vintage contains 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot,9% Petit Verdot, and 8% Malbec.
Established in 1969, Moss Wood is an important, founding estate of the Margaret River wine region in the northern sub-region of Wilyabrup, Western Australia. Clare & Keith Mugford, as winemakers, viticulturists & proprietors, have been making wine & tending the vineyard at Moss Wood since 1984 & 1979, respectively. Their exacting viticulture ensures the production of high-quality fruit, and they have created a stable of fine wines distinguished by their consistency over each vintage, along with their ability to age superbly.
They have put significant effort into developing an appropriate style for each of their wines, but Cabernet Sauvignon, their first wine, is still the primary focus. Naturally, they looked to the great wines of Bordeaux for inspiration and carefully examined the factors that have made Bordeaux the benchmark for Cabernet Sauvignon.
As they were making wine in Margaret River inspired by those of the Medoc, they felt it was important to consider the Bordeaux environment as opposed to Margaret River’s individualistic climate and terroir. Wine writer Jancis Robinson has called them the Chateau Latour of Australia, and, we might add, for a fraction of what Latour costs.

Most of the top Chateaux in Bordeaux produce a "second label" wine, and in this case, it's from the illustrious Chateau Lagrange. Created in 1983, “les Fiefs de Lagrange” is so much more than a second wine. Produced from young vines (with an average age of 30 years) and planted on fine gravel soils for the Cabernet Sauvignon and clay for the Merlot, it bears more than a passing resemblance to its big brother.

This is their flagship wine and an absolutely stellar Cabernet with layers of complexity and character. This 2022 marks the 50th vintage of Moss Wood's Cabernet is made up of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cab Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. It was matured in 228 litre French oak barrels (16% new).

"In summary, what do we make of the 2022 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon, the 50th vintage of this wine? Given the milestone, we’re happy and just a bit relieved we’ve been able to deliver a year with all the classic features of the style. The warm season ensured consistent ripeness, so the wine displays the vineyard’s typically dark fruit aromas and the palate certainly has the expected key feature of concentrated but balanced tannin, all enhanced by the prettier fragrances which we attribute to the cooler final weeks in March. Very few have been better."
