This whisky is not without some controversy. Like a lot of 100% rye whiskies bottled in the States, Pendleton and Mastersons to name a few Whistle Pigs origins are here in Calgary at Alberta Distillers. In order to get rye grains to ferment, you require at least some malted rye or barley. Alberta Distillers is one of the few places in the world where a straight rye mash is distilled.

Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: sweet, syrupy and floral; notes of dill, silky honey, marshmallows and jellybeans; lots of delicate spices: ginger, cinnamon and cardamom.
Palate: still sweet, dark and decadent spices, honey and more marshmallows, dill and peppery spices; some syrup notes and licorice.
Finish: long, spicy and sweet with more delicate floral notes.

Nose: Allspice, orange peel, anise, oak, char and caramel
Palate: Sweet; hints of caramel and vanilla, followed by ryespice and mint
Finish: Long finish; warm butterscotch and caramel.

High West bottles some tremendous American Whiskey, and may be the best blender in the USA. The Rendezvous Rye from High West is a blend of four to seven-year-old rye with a high rye content in the mash bill. The two components are a 95% Rye from MGP of Indiana and an 80% Rye, 20% Malted Rye from High West Distillery itself. The result is a complex but very drinkable Rye. Bottled at 46% ABV.

A proper straight rye whiskey from the state of Kentucky bottled at 42.4%.
While the Michter’s name has a long and storied history, the Michter’s Distillery of Louisville, KY has only been in operation since 2015. Any whiskey bottled that is older than that was sourced from other distilleries, typically within Kentucky. Luckily, the quality of anything bottled with the Michter’s label on it is typically high, regardless of their original provenance.
Other than their single barrel products, Michter’s typically bottles their whiskey from selected small batches of 20 barrels or less.

The flagship Whisky from Alberta Distillers, which itself was founded in 1946. Alberta Premium has been a ubiquitous bottle in this province and others since it was first launched back in 1958. Made right here in Calgary, Alberta, this 100% Rye is priced like a bar rail whisky but is also quite a good whisky. It is a good introduction to what Alberta Distillers is capable of. 40%.

One of three bonded whiskey releases from Breuckelen Distilling which resides right in Brooklyn, New York. The Whiskies in the 77 series from the distillery, such as this Bonded Rye, are all distilled using a column still. The Bonded Rye is made from a Mash Bill of 100% Rye and aged for at least four years in virgin oak barrels before being bottled at 50% ABV, or 100 proof.
The term "Bonded" or "Bottled in Bond" means that this whiskey had to adhere to the following standards as originally written into law by the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897:
- All whiskey in the bottle must be produced by one distillery and by one distiller over the course of one distillation season.
- The whiskey must be at least four years old.
- It must be bottled at at least 100 proof / 50% ABV
- The whiskey must be aged in bonded warehouses under United States federal supervision.
- The label on the bottle has to state which distillery it comes from and also where it was bottled.
Breuckelen Distillery was founded in 2010 in Brooklyn, New York. Like many of the newer and smaller craft distilleries, they have a focus on using mostly local ingredients - which in this case means using mostly organic grains grown their home state of New York whenever possible.
