Since 2004, Tantalus has been crafting a focused portfolio of wines made with intention and authenticity, and guided by good land stewardship. With some of the country’s oldest vinifera plantings at the backbone of their home estate, Tantalus has carved out a reputation as a top riesling, syrah,chardonnay, and pinot noir producer both in Canada, and abroad. In the glass, it offers a lifted aromatic profile of rose petal, violets, and sweet thyme—evoking a summer garden in full bloom. Hints of wild herbs, subtle citrus oil, and pomegranate add complexity and freshness. The palate is taut and quietly powerful, with notes of young blackberry, baking spice, and blood orange. There’s a brooding quality to this vintage—structure over plushness—with fine-grained tannins and a gently persistent finish.

Tantalus was established in 2004 when Proprietor Eric Savics was presented with the opportunity to acquire one of the Okanagan Valley’s premier vineyard properties. Originally known as Pioneer Vineyards, the site was first planted to table grapes in 1927 by renowned, local horticulturist JW Hughes. The old vine plantings – 1978 Riesling and 1985 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay became the backbone of the vineyard. Other varietals were removed and new plantings of the 3 flagship varietals commenced in 2005. The vineyard would not only have considerable vine age as its anchor, but it would also grow to have superior clone variation as well. With the success of the wines and the increase in production came the need to build a new winery. Tantalus’ sleek new facility was completed in March 2010 and has the distinction of being British Columbia’s first LEED-certified winery. This wine has been awarded best overall BC wine in previous competitions. The vines are generally regarded as the oldest vinifera plantings in the Okanagan.

Moraine is derived from the geological term for the glaciated white clay buffs that comprise the breathtaking Naramata Bench. Also known as “boulder clay“, Moraine is a deposit of clay which is formed beneath glaciers and ice-sheets during the Glacial Period in North America, specifically, in the Okanagan Valley as we know it today. As a result, these glaciated white clay cliffs comprise the wondrous Naramata Bench and inspire the winery’s land-formed name. This is estate-grown pinot noir from their Sophia Vineyard. Hand-picked and fermented in small 1-ton vats. Complex and layered with bright, tangy notes of raspberry, darker elements of black cherry and mulberry, and a subtle undercurrent of cedar and toast. Fine tannins balance this elegant, medium-bodied pinot noir.

Just gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. "A rich garnet in colour, the nose is bursting of lingonberry, Bing cherry and sweet anise alongside floral notes of crushed rose petal and violet. Ripe raspberry and dark plum emerge on the palate with an intriguing graphite minerality on the finish. All sourced from our single vineyard estate, select Pinot Noir blocks were handpicked and vinified in small lots using entirely wild fermentation. The small batches were then placed into a selection of new and seasoned French oak barriques for 12 months and blended, unfined and unfiltered, just prior to bottling. Although enjoyed in its youth we see this wine aging gracefully over the next 7 to 10 years," according to the winery. And we agree!
