Marchetti Sergio owner of the estate of Fossacolle, belongs to an old patriarchal family of the 18th century. This family’s descendants have ever been living and farming on the land of a large and noble lineage. At the beginning of the 80s, the owner of this land sold the territories where the Marchettis worked and decided to donate them the “Podere Fossacolle”. In 1984, the first Sangiovese vineyards were planted, marking the start of the viticulture activity on the property. Some years later, the vineyards were registered as Brunello di Montalcino, allowing the winery to develop the enological aspects along with investments in modern gear and wood barrels. On January 1st, 2002, the winery issued their first Brunello di Montalcino, vintage 1997. The 2022 Rosso features aromas of ripe, dried red fruits and blood orange. It offers considerable complexity on the palate, displaying dark fruit and spicy notes with firm ripe tannins.

Set amongst the northeastern hills of Montalcino the imposing structure of the 15th century Palazzo Altesi overlooks the estate. Built by the Tuscan family Tricerchi, whose marble crest can still be seen set over the old oak entrance door. Since 2002 Altesino has been owned by the Gnudi Angelini family, a forerunner in the pursuit of excellence, with the introduction of the “Cru” concept (Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli) concept in 1975, Altesino was among the first wineries to use barriques in 1979. They are one of the most consistently excellent and affordable Brunello's on the market today.

Think of Rosso di Montalcino as the baby brother to Brunello. Whereas Brunello must be in oak for a minimum of three years, the Rosso spends 18 months in barrel. They are generally ready to drink upon release whereas young Brunello always benefits from time in the cellar. It offers a classic core of sweet black cherry fruit and cassis with smoky undertones, a polished gem of a wine.

Fattoria La Gerla, named for the large, old-fashioned, conical baskets that grape-harvesters used to carry on their backs, was founded in 1976 by the late Sergio Rossi. Originally from Milan, Mr. Rossi purchased the property in 1975 from Tedina Biondi-Santi, the daughter of Tancredi Biondi-Santi, who had inherited the property after her father’s passing. The purchase of what was then called the Podere Colombaio Santi included an ancient farmhouse and 6.5 hectare of vineyards. Mr. Rossi, who by then had been managing the Altesino-Caparzo estate for several years, renamed the property La Gerla and set about restoring the estate and replanting the vines using selection massale. His first vintage was 1976, making La Gerla one of the first 35 bottlers of Brunello di Montalcino; these days, there are 280. Today, La Gerla consists of 11.5 hectares, divided between the original 6.5 hectare vineyard in Canalicchio (Montalcino) and an additional 5 hectares in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, where Mr. Rossi was presciently the first to plant vines in earnest. The estate, now run by vineyard manager/director Alberto Passeri and winemaker Vittorio Fiore, makes five wines, all made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso, the only grape planted on the property.
