Originally from France's Medoc region, Carmenere has become Chile's flagship red wine grape. Mayu Carménère Gran Reserva is made from 100% Carmenere, a stunning red with luscious black fruit on the palate with notes of dried tobacco and espresso on the finish. The grapes are from the warmest part of the Elqui Valley located at the entrance of Vicuña at an altitude of 650m (2130 feet). The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and partially aged in American oak barrels. Best paired with hearty meat dishes and mature cheeses.

Alberto Siegel Lubbe was a German architect, born in 1870. He built some of the most important and traditional buildings in Santiago from the 20th century, including the Reserva Federal de Chile building. His son Alberto Siegel Dauelsberg was a winegrower in charge of well-known vineyards. Later he studied agronomy and acquired experience in some wine cellars in Germany. In the Colchagua Valley, for more than 30 years, Alberto Siegel Dauelsberg planted the first vineyards, now known as Viña Siegel. Viña Siegel has more than 700 hectares planted with vineyards distributed in seven regions, strategically located at the foothills of The Andes.

Viña Mayu was established in 2005 in the Elqui Valley, the first quality wine producer to enter the wine business in the region since 1998. Mauro Olivier was one of the pioneers, planting vines and sourcing grapes from the different vineyards in the valley. He started working in his family vineyards for table grape production at a young age; years later he began working in Pisco production (the national Chilean spirit, made from white wine). In 2000, he planted the first Carménère and Syrah vines in the valley. 5 years later, in 2005, he decided it was time to embark on his own wine project, under the Mayu label. Mayu is an ancient INCA name for the Milky Way, literally meaning "creek of stars", and it is one of the best places on Earth for stargazing. The region lies 400 km (250 mi) north of Santiago, at the southern end of the Atacama Desert in the Coquimbo region, and rises to 2000 metres above sea level. These are great value wines produced from what is effectively a high-altitude desert. The hot arid climate allows for good ripening while the cold desert nights help preserve acidity.
