The Terre di San Leonardo is the IGT younger sibling of the iconic San Leonardo. Like its older sibling, it is a Bordeaux-style blend from an amazing Italian producer. The 2019 vintage consists of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Carmenère with 4/5ths being matured in concrete vats and the remaining 1/5 in French oak barrels. This big red will pair nicely with big red meat dishes and hard cheese.

92 Points - Monica Larner - "This is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère with fruit contributions from across the estate vineyard holdings. The well-priced 2016 Terre di San Leonardo is a terrific sounding board not only for the vintage and its classic lines but also for the unique San Leonardo territory and microclimate at the Adige River bed between mountain peaks. The wine opens to a medium-light appearance with dark garnet highlights. The aromas are delicate and soft, with a lot of blue flower and wild rose. A refreshing layer of forest berry and cassis come next, and the bouquet finishes up with mulling spice and smoke. There is a point of sour cherry or cranberry on the finish."

Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc it sees 12 hours of low-temperature maceration on the skins, followed by gentle pressing and fermentation for 20 days. Ripasso wine is made using an ancient winemaking technique called "ripasso." (Some call it the poor man's Amarone!) The young Valpolicella wine is fermented with the unpressed but drained skins and lees left over from making Amarone. This adds flavour and intensity, though Ripasso normally has a lighter taste than Amarone wines, which makes it easier to combine with food, and is often less expensive. Fruity, well-balanced and very well structured. Best food matches are: red meat, game and cheeses.
