Bodegas Protos, from the Greek meaning "first", is named after the completion of the first large, modern wine cellar in the region of Comarca. Made from 100% Tempranillo, this charming red is full and concentrated on the nose with ripe berry and a touch of oak flavours on the palate.
The Tinta del pais (Tempranillo) grapes are harvested from the Burgos and Valladolid vineyards which contain 25+ year old vines. This the baby of the family, a bright, easy-drinking red that spends six months in both French and American oak barrels. It has a Morello cherry core with some blue fruits and a touch of spice.

Winery Tasting Note (2018 Vintage)
Nose: Frank and intense, where aromas of red and black fruit stand out, accompanied by spicy and light toasted notes.
Palate: It has good structure, fruity, fresh, with a sweet, balanced oak and with very pleasant soft tannins.

Tomato based dishes, such as pasta pomodoro, puttanesca, stuffed eggplant, etc. Chistorra, salami, cheese.
Back in the before-times pre-Covid when parties and gatherings were a thing, we held a staff get-together afterward at an undisclosed location (Andrew's House). This may come as a shock, but wine, whisky, beer and good food are usually tasted and imbibed at events such as this. On one of these occasions, previous Store Manager Dave Tyler brought in a few bottles of Protos for us all to taste and see what we thought. The wines were a resounding success and we quickly went about sourcing some cases for our store shelves. Protos has come in and out of availability since then, but we do what we can to make sure to carry the wine of this Bodega whenever possible. It started as a staff favourite and quickly grew to be a customer favourite as well.
Bodegas Protos winery started in 1927 and was initially known as the Cooperatia de Pañafiel. It was a partnership that included 11 of the best winemakers in the region. The name “Protos” means “first” in Greek, and Protos was the first winery of Peñafiel, Spain. In 1982 the Consejo Regulador (the Spanish wine regulatory authority) recognized the high-quality wine produced by Bodegas Protos and created the Ribera del Duero DO of Spain. Over the intervening years, Bodegas Protos has grown to 1600 hectares of property and produces barrel-aged 100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, 100% of the white grape Verdejo from Rueda and delicious Rosados from Cigales.

Protos has the distinction of producing wines in the Ribera de Duero region since 1927, making them the first producer to sell their wines commercially. They authorized the use of their Ribera del Duero brand for the region, and in doing so created what has become one of the most famous names in Spanish viticulture. They built their new state-of-the-art facility in 2008, and the structure has won awards for its design. The fruit for this wine is sourced from two of their oldest vineyards, Burgos and Valladolid, both averaging 35 years of age. It spends 12 months in French and American barrels and shows subtle notes of vanilla, char, and spice, all wrapped in a core of red fruits. The tannins are soft and well-integrated, a nice choice for charcuterie or roast chicken.

The Heartland story began in the late 1990s when winemaker Ben Glaetzer became excited about the outstanding quality of fruit being grown in some of South Australia’s lesser-known regions, in particular Langhorne Creek.
Together with industry veterans Scott Collett, Grant Tilbroo, and more recently Nick Keukenmeester, they grew Heartland into an award-winning winery. Ben Glaetzer makes Heartland Wines at Barossa Vintners in Tanunda, South Australia, some 100 kilometres from Langhorne Creek. The winery was conceived as a state-of-the-art winemaking facility with the capacity to make wines for a core group of top-end producers whose fame and demand had grown beyond their winemaking capacities. Completed in 1995, Barossa Vintners was developed to make wines in the most natural possible way. The natural slope of the land allows the winery to be gravity fed and avoid a harsh pumping of the grapes juice (Ben also makes his range of Glaetzer wines at this facility, most famously his Amon-ra Shiraz). The growing conditions in Langhorne Creek are predominantly shaped by the onshore southerly winds blowing directly from the Southern Ocean across Lake Alexandrina. The prevailing southerlies reduce daytime temperature fluctuations, making it one of the cooler growing regions in South Australia

The oldest vines, averaging 60 years of age, are the source for the flagship red, spending 24 months in French (80%) and American oak barrels, and another three years in bottle prior to release. It's a complex mix of exotic spice, dark red berries and vanilla with ripe, well-integrated tannins. Lamb and game meats come to mind and decanting is recommended. It is capable of another decade or so of age.
