"Waxiness is a mysterious but essential character of so many whiskies. In Whiskyland, the responsibility for it's successful imbuement lies with Max Wax. He's one of Whiskyland's most dedicated, dogged and unashamedly geeky public servants. We don't quite know what he gets up to in the stillrooms, worm tubs, spirit receivers and warehouses, but we know he's been responsible for some of Whiskyland's greatest waxbombs over the years. This utterly luscious 1989, 36 year old Cragganmore that has matured its whole life in a simple refill hogshead, is one of the finest example of his artistry."

"This baby will no doubt be less bitter than its sparring partner of the day. Colour: gold. Nose: we do find some elements of the younger one, notably that paraffin and liquid wax profile, but here it’s taken on a near-fractal tertiary development, veering towards flowers, apples and greengages, rounded out with walnut oil, peanut oil and sesame. It’s absolutely lovely. With water: freshly cut hay in the middle of August. Mouth (neat): utterly splendid, beautifully old-school, with those same bitters again but now softened and more delicate, along with heaps of citrus zest, some rather serious green tea, and the sensation of biting into a beeswax candle. What’s most spectacular is the overall balance. With water: and the hay returns. Our neighbours in the Vosges make hay wine and I must say, it can be really good, especially when said hay contained a good number of various flowers. Finish: long, narrowing onto the bitters and waxes, which is perfectly normal. Overripe apple peeks through on the aftertaste. Comments: the best Cragganmore of the year so far (that’s clever, S.) You can tell it’s an old malt whisky, yet it has none of the usual drawbacks—no dryness, no overt tannins, no cardboardy bits… in short, none of that here, which is rather surprising. A slight cerebral touch all the same. I adore it. SGP:461 - 91 points."

As Jimmy Barleycorn's presence denotes, this is pure, raw, vivid old malt whisky, that reeks of raw malted barley, yeast and time. In fact, no one is particularly sure whether they are bars with large reading selections, or libraries that serve drinks. It doesn't do to ponder these unanswerable questions too deeply. "Whiskyland Chapter Seventeen is a bit of an experiment. A mixing together of Glen Moray single malt from three different cask types and vintages. Small amounts of whisky from one refill sherry and two refill bourbon hogsheads, were all married together in that most romantic of vessels, an IBC, to create a small-batch 31 year old Glen Moray that's richly fruity, waxy and honeyed with abundant old school Speyside character. There are certainly parts of Whiskyland which are goverened by chaos, but this bottling comes from one of Whiskyland's more serene places, where balance and harmony are very much the rule. We hope this wee Glen Moray demonstrates those same qualities..."
