About the Label
"The inspiration for our original label comes straight out of a British made sitcom called ‘Father Ted’ It originally aired on Channel 4 from April 1995 and ran for just three series up until May 1998. It came straight from an episode called ‘A Song for Europe’ that featured ‘My lovely Horse’. We didn’t want to change the label too much. That “My Lovely Horse” one is just bloody classic. Nice one, Emily!"
700 mlAndrew's Tasting Note
Nose: warm, spicy, and decadent promising exotic treats and fruit; Manuka honey, Dulce de Leche, and butter tarts; chocolate pecan pie and Scottish tablet; mango, papaya, and pineapple; barrel aged maple syrup and a hint of Fernet Branca; decadent spice and earthy oak.
Palate: sweet, fruity, and spicy with more decadent treats; increasingly tropical and exotic with each sip; mango, papaya, pineapple, and even a hint of kiwi; building chocolate and sweet spice; more chocolate pecan pie, Scottish tablet, and peanut butter pie (from The Granary in Saskatoon); Manuka honey, barrel aged maple syrup and the Toronto cocktail at True Wild (which contains Fernet and sweet vermouth); soft hay-like malty tones.
Finish: warming, spicy, and fruity; layers of tropical fruit, decadent deserts, and honey.
Comment: this is the best Irish whiskey I've had in at least the last year; I as anxious about the Maury cask finish (which is a type of fortified wine), but those concerns were misplaced; far from being too wine-y, or masking the spirit, it compliments it well; Bushmills at twenty years and up goes tropical, and those fruits are on full display here; like the label on the bottle, this whisky pops!
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Invitingly reminiscent of sweet, milky black tea or chai, with a buttery shortbread aroma. A softer sweetness of ripe mango emerges, followed by the cask's delicate milk chocolate and rich, syrupy sultanas, suggesting a significant sherry or fortified wine influence over the 22 years.
Taste: The texture is gratifyingly rich, coating the mouth with creamy caramel. The flavour is intensely tropical and fruity, featuring mango, banana, soft peach, and dark plum, all beautifully integrated with a refined, antique cigar box note suggesting long oak maturation.
That Boutique-y Whisky Company (TBWC) is part of the Atom Group, which also owns the UK retailer Master of Malt and a number of other subsidiaries. They are a dynamic and innovative firm, who by example invented the Whisky Advent Calendar concept. Established in 2012, TBWC is famous for its playful and colourful labels, which often feature prominent whisky industry figures, tell a story, and or elude to an inside joke. The labels are typically laced with hidden elements and "Easter Eggs."
TBWC bottles whiskies from around the world, though the bulk of their offerings are of Scottish origin. Most of their offerings are small-batch releases, Blended Malts, and Blends. Their "Head of Whisky" is Canadian Sam Simmons.
We are big fans of not only their whimsical labels but also the consistently high standard of liquid they bottle.
