Producer Description

"For a quarter of a century, it has been the Ardbeg Committee’s raison d’être to debate, discuss and disagree in any way it sees fit about the ultimate Islay malt. As indeed a select group were summoned to do in a hidden corner of the Distillery one Ardbeg Day. This whisky is the result of those top secret deliberations. After months of experimentation in pursuit of the ultimate Committee bottling, our whisky creation team have pulled off the impossible.

"Is it possible to capture the multifarious flavour preferences of thousands of fans in a single dram? If this bottling is anything to go by, the answer is a resounding ‘yes!’ By skilfully combining PX sherry casks with roasted malt spirit matured in bourbon casks, Ardbeg’s whisky creators have masterminded this exuberant and complex dram. Salted crispy seaweed and sweet cinnamon jostle with dark chocolate coated raisins and burning embers. A paradoxical whisky truly befitting the hotchpotch nature of the Committee, united by a love of all things smoky. Eureka!"

Producer Tasting Note

Aroma: Full and fruity on the nose with cherry and juicy red apple. Caramel infused coffee grounds and cocoa powder are softened with a retrained smoke initially of heather bonfire and hand rolled sweet tobacco leaves. There are some herbal notes like cedar & fennel present in the distant background. With water dark chocolate and walnut oil comes through and more smoke emerges through the sweeter fruits. Like walking alongside a road that’s being freshly tarred!

Taste: An explosion of sweet flavours like nut toffee brittle, raisin fudge and dark fruits (fig, damson and plump cherries) is balanced with a rockpool salinity or salted crispy seaweed. Dark chocolate coated raisins lead into chicory and sweet cinnamon spices alongside a curious drying sensation. The smoke builds up to a crescendo of sweet applewood and a medicinal iodine, burnt moss and ash.

Finish: The finish is long and chewy with sweet treacle toffee aniseed spice, coal tar soap and burning embers.

Evan here - I am not going to get into Ardbeg’s history or location or ownership too much. It is old, and it is on Islay. To say more is to preach to the choir for the most part. If you are keen to know more, just mispronounce the name as ‘Ardberg’ within the hearing of Andrew or Curt. You will quickly be corrected and then likely be given the chronological timeline of the distillery in question as well as a thorough essay on why it is perhaps the best distillery on Islay, if not in Scotland itself.

Anyhow. For a relatively small distillery, Ardbeg’s releases have become relatively prolific over the past few years. The distillery can boast about having the most rabid fan base in the world of Single Malt Scotch, and many of its releases correlate with this. Just about every limited edition bottle of Ardbeg is released to Ardbeg Committee Members first. Membership is free and allows you to find out when the next Ardbeg Limited Release is, well, released.

The core range of Ardbeg is strong. If you like you want a taste of what all of the fuss is about when it comes to Ardbeg, the regular Ardbeg 10-Year-Old is a great place to start. If you want a bottle that is a wee bit sweeter and goes in a few more directions when it comes to flavour profile, Ardbeg An Oa should suit you. The combination of peat Sherry is your thing? Then go for the Ardbeg Uigeadail. If you want the Ardbeg-ness of Ardbeg dialled up to 11, go for the Corryvreckan. And now, if you find yourself craving a release of Ardbeg that has an age statement, but you already have the Ardbeg 10, you can go for the Wee Beastie!
