STR casks (shaved, toasted, recharred) have been a godsend for the whisky world. The concept has helped restore faith in the institution of wine cask maturation. Those of us with a bit of reticence when it comes to malts matured in casks that once held that grapey goodness have found STRing to be the panacea to all of those sour, funky, fermenty whiskies of the past.
This is the second edition of this core Lindores Abbey expression that was matured in former red wine barriques. Rather dessertish. One dram isn't quite enough. Nor is two.
Natural colour, non-chill filtered, and bottled at 49.4% abv.
700 mlAndrew'sTasting Note
Nose: rich, fruity, and spicy with syrupy delights; barrel aged maple syrup on buttered whole wheat blueberry pancakes; chocolate covered acai berries and Turkish Delight; a touch of smooth leather and damp tobacco; plump malt and dried dark fruits in treacle sauce.
Palate: rich, fruity, and malty with more syrupy delights and festive spices; ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and anise; moist Aussie licorice and candied fennel seeds; raisins, dates, and figs, chocolate covered acai berries, and wholewheat blueberry pancakes slathered in butter and liberally topped with barrel aged maple syrup; lots going on here for a young malt, the Turkish Delight and treacle sauce are still here too, as is a thread of smoke.
Finish: bright, fruity, and syrupy, with decadent spices and a skiff of clean smoke.
Comment: I was expecting something closer to Kavalan Vinho here, but that is no bad thing; the Vinho can be a bit over the top, and this is far from that; it is rich, layered, and far more complex than you'd expect for its age, with an intriguing and fairly prominent smoke note; the malt is only peated to 0.5ppm, so this has to be from the STR cask; in any case, I never thought I like this as much as I do, and that is why we opted to take it on as an exclusive, rather than look at a pricier single cask!
