The second release of Old Orkney from Decadent Drinks is a 2004 vintage Highland Park, matured 19 years in a Refill Hogshead before bottling at 53%. 89.02pts Whiskybase
Producer Description
"To continue our Old Orkney brand, we wanted to find a cask that was suitably different from the previous one. This 2004 refill hogshead of Orkney Malt was just the ticket, less peaty than O.O.1, this is more about super classical Orkney heather honey and coastal freshness, with just a wee peck of peat in the background. A gorgeous and very classical example of this rugged old Orcadian Viking.
"This is O.O.2, our second bottling in our Old Orkney series.
"For this bottling we selected a 2004 refill hogshead which we’ve bottled at 19 years of age and with several degrees reduction to 53%. We felt this magnified the coastal and classical heather honey notes of this Orkney single malt. This is slightly less peaty than O.O.1, but no less evocative or powerful, and indeed the extra maturity brings a richness and depth to this whisky that is hugely satisfying."
About the Old Orkney Brand
"Very early on in the Decadent Drinks story, Angus had the idea to see if he might be able to buy the historic, but long dormant, Old Orkney brand. AKA: 'Double O'. After all, nothing ventured, nothing gained. The reason for this is that one of the big influences upon Angus' approach to bottling and branding, was the old 'Double O.O.' brand. It was originally the bottling brand of Stromness Distillery on Orkney, which sadly closed in 1928. After that time the brand quickly fell into dormancy and was used only very sporadically in the intervening decades."

Nose: rich and silky, dominated by honey, dried heather, pollens and seashore pebbles, with just a thread of peat smoke in the background. Water magnifies these honeyed notes and brings out a lovely herbal side.
Palate: perfect at this bottling strength, very rounded, naturally sweet and involving all these lovely honey, heathery, fruity and faintly peaty notes. Showing superb maturity and mouthfeel too, with a lovely waxiness that only enhances with water.
Finish: long, similarly perfectly integrated, balanced and with a peppery, warming aftertaste.

This 17 year old single cask of Highland Park comes to us from indie bottler Gordon & MacPhail. It was distilled in 2006 and matured in a refill sherry puncheon before being bottled at a cask strength of 60.3%

"Introducing... Orkney Sponge! Our mash up of the Whisky Sponge and Old Orkney brands because we're into that kind of fun and nonsense! Edition OO1 is a 1998 refill hogshead of 23 year old Highland Park. It has been bottled at natural cask strength of 57.0% and has a surprisingly peaty and almost old style HP profile with plenty dry herbal and medical notes with loads of coastal freshness. Just the style we adore from this, one of our favourite distilleries. Old Orkney was, of course, the brand associated with Stromness back before the distillery sadly closed in the 1920s. It was way ahead of its time in terms of funny and witty advertising and super elegant, cool branding. It has long been an inspiration for what we've tried to do with Sponge, which is why we went out of our way to buy the brand. Orkney Sponge is our first wee experiment at having some fun with Old Orkney."
