2nd Seating Added for Bruichladdich's Jim McEwan this Friday at 4PM - Can you say Happy Hour?
Posted on September 24, 2013
Jim McEwan is one of the most respected figures in the world of whisky, with August marking his 50th Year in the industry. On August 1st 1963 Jim began work at Bowmore distillery on Islay as an apprentice cooper. Jim continued to work for Morison Bowmore for the next 35 years, including a 12 year stint as Bowmore's Distillery manager. In 2000 Jim joined a group looking to acquire the closed Bruichladdich distillery. They bought it that year and brought it back to life in very short order. Over the following 13 years Jim and his team have taken it from virtual obscurity to one of the Scotch industry's most recognized brands. Their hard work paid off this year when Remy Cointreau bought the distillery from the private group for £58 million. When we announced a few weeks back that Jim McEwan would be hosting a tasting at KWM on Friday September 27th it sold out almost instantaneously. We've added a second "Happy Hour" tasting from 4-6PM on the 27th, which will feature the same whiskies (listed below), hosted by the same charismatic brand ambassador. This could be your last chance to see the legendary Jim McEwan, with this visit rumoured to be his farewell tour. The price for the tasting is $50, and as an added bonus, all attendees (at both tastings) will receive a $20 gift card to be used towards the purchase of anything in store. Perhaps even a bottle of Bruichladdich for Jim to leave his signature on!
Our 4PM and 7PM seatings with Jim McEwan will feature the following whiskies:
Bruichladdich Laddie Classic
Bruichladdich Islay Barley Dunlossit
Bruichladdich Laddie 22 Year
Bruichladdich Cuvee 382 La Berenice
Bruichladdich Cuvee 407 PX
Bruichladdich Cuvee 640 Eroica
Port Charlotte 10 Year
PC10
Most of these whiskies are in very short supply in Alberta, and won't be available much longer. A farewell tasting not just for Jim, but also for some of these Bruichladdich expressions.

Posted on September 18, 2013
We are holding a very special tequila tasting on Tuesday September 24th to mark the Canadian launch of the 1800 Coleccion 2010 Extra Anejo Ortus tequila. We will sample through the 1800 range, including the 1800 Silver, 1800 Reposado, 1800 Anejo and the 1800 Coconut Liqueur. We will be bolstering the lineup with the Cuervo Reserva de la Familia and Maestro Dobel Diamond a filtered Extra Anejo tequila.
The highlight of the tasting will of course be the 1800 Collecion 2010 Extra Anejo. This limited edition tequila was created and bottled a the historic site of "Hacienda Los Camichines" in Jalisco. Only 400 bottles of this tequila are crafted each year. Aged for a minimum of 10 years in French oak barrels the final product is carefully blended for depth, complexity and subtlety.
Every year a Mexican artist is selected to craft the decanter. The 2010 edition has been designed by Hector Velazquez, a visual artist born in Mxxico City in 1965. The bottling is named "Ortus", meaning origins.
The price to attend this tasting is a very reasonable $75 +GST!

Jura Distillery Tasting with Willie Tait on Tuesday September 17th
Posted on September 13, 2013
The Isle of Jura is a remote sparsely inhabited island on Scotland's west coast. Located to the north-east of Islay and running along the Kintyre peninsula for about 40 miles. Most of the island is wild and uninhabited, dominated by its three large volcanic mountains, 'the Paps'. There is just a small single track road leading from the Ferry port at Feolin to the main town of Craighouse. From there the road only continues 2/3 of the way up the island's east coast, after which there is little more than a jeep track. It is along this remote and isolated stretch of coast that George Orwell wrote 1984.The Jura distillery was reopened in 1963 in part to revitalize the island economy and prevent further erosion of its population. In the last few decades the island's population has stabilized at 196 people, a far cry from the 3,000 inhabitants which may have lived there in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The island's people are outnumbered 30 to 1 by its population of red deer.
At times the ugly step child to Dalmore in the Whyte and MacKay portfolio, Jura has been reinvigorated in the last few years and is finally coming into its own, and earning the respect it deserves. Join us for a tasting with former Jura Distillery Manager and travelling Brand Ambassador Willie Tait on Tuesday September 17th to learn the history and legends behind the lonely isle, and its namesake distillery.
We'll sample the following Isle of Jura malts:
Jura 10 Year
Jura Superstition
Jura Prophecy
Jura Elixir - $58.49
Jura Boutique Barrels 1993
Jura Boutique Barrels 1996
Jura 30 Year - Limited Release - $509.99
Jura 1977 - Exclusive to KWM - Only 5 bottles in Canada! - $879.99
