“St George’s is the home to The English Whisky Co. The beautiful distillery was designed and built by the Nelstrop family for the specific purpose of producing the very finest English Single Malt Whisky.
“Why England and more specifically Why Roudham, Norfolk? Well, there are only two main ingredients in whisky, barley and water and we have them both. We draw the purest, cleanest water from the Breckland aquifer deep beneath our distillery. Norfolk is one of the world’s premier growing barley regions, so our supply is plentiful and local.
“The only other thing needed to create the very best malt whisky is oak casks. We don't add colour, we don't add flavour, we let the barrels do that for us, so we have to buy only the very finest oak casks. Most of ours are supplied by direct from America, having first been used for the maturation of bourbon. We also mature in sherry casks, and various other wine casks.
Our whisky is batch made by hand with no computers, filled into casks and then left to sleep until our distillers consider it perfect for bottling, which of course we do by hand - one bottle at a time.

Millstone 1996 American Oak Cask 1376

An Alberta exclusive single cask of Millstone bottled by Greg and Jarka Winters of Craftwork Sprits. The whisky is from a single Virgin American oak cask filled in 1996, matured 20 years and bottled at 51.45%. The Dutch are very precise. I was worried that 20 years in a Virgin Oak cask would have left too heavy an oak imprint on the whisky, but far from it, it was a deft touch!
Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: bread and butter pudding with canned whip cream; dried apricots and peaches n cream; strawberry puff candies an cooked marshmallow; French bakery notes: fruit flan, croissants and other baked goods.
Palate: waxy, tropical and creamy; toasty, oily and coating; more dried apricot, peaches and whip cream from a can; floral and spicy with toasted coconut, marmalade and some orange rind; this is sweet, fruity and waxy, a beautiful malt
Finish: warming, toasty and peppery; the fruits are all on the front end, but traces linger with a waxy oily grip.
Comment: this is a lovely, layered and fruity malt; 20 years in virgin oak, has surprisingly not overwhelmed the spirit, but it has had a deft touch; a wonderful concentration of flavours!

One of the most interesting Auchentoshans we've seen yet. The Bartender's Malt was the construct of a dozen of the world's best bartenders. Their goal? Build a malt whisky big enough to stand up to the demands of cocktails that require Scotch whisky as one of their ingredients. Whether or not you believe it borders on blasphemy to bury a fine single malt whisky in juices and syrups and fruit is a debate for another day, but it should be made clear what these 12 innovators were up against. Auchentoshan is a Lowland malt, triple distilled, with a reputation for being something of a lightweight. By nature, something like that is bound to get out-muscled in a mixed drink, right? Well...not necessarily. They've upped the abv, included some spicier, more lively casks (of all sorts!), and vatted whiskies from the last five decades in order to create something that was punchy enough to cut through. And you know what? They've succeeded.
