Lamadrid Malbec Matilde

Lamadrid Malbec Matilde

$79.99

Hector and Pablo Durigutti were born in Mendoza, the cradle of Argentinian wine and were raised together. Their childhood and their home were always connected to a sensorial world, with aromas, ingredients and flavours that, over time, motivated them to choose the path to become enologists. As adults, they would find these familiar memories and similar passions. In 2002 they dedicated their efforts to the creation of a small family winey. Today the brothers have evolved to form a new generation of winemakers, leading an evolutionary change in Argentina’s viticulture. Their range includes the value-driven Abeja wines and the upper-tier Las Compuertas offerings produced from the oldest vineyard sites.

Matilde is the flagship wine of this up-and-coming Argentine venture and precious little is produced. Sourced from the same estate vineyard with vines dating back to 1929, Matilde spends 24 months in new French oak. This loaded effort displays more obvious (but well-integrated) oak. This is an unctuous and silky red with a long finish. In the nose, aromas of vanilla, white chocolate, mocha, and tobacco combine with ripened fruit, blackcurrant, and plum. Food pairings? Big red meats!

Sommeliers Choice Awards (2013 Vintage)

97 Points - Double Gold - "This wine has huge value for the price. It is very well-made, potentially world-class. I would like to see how the wine continues to develop over the next decade, it is drinking quite well now."

Wine Enthusiast Tasting Note (2013 Vintage)

95 Points - Michael Schachner - "A round, smoky nose with blackberry and cassis aromas offers a sultry entry to this wine. It's tannic and resiny on the palate, but well integrated with the toasty oak flavors in front of cassis and chocolate notes. This Malbec from a lauded vintage is smooth and steady on the finish. Drink through 2028."

Winery Tasting Note (2013 Vintage)

Its vineyards, more than 70 years old, are located in La Matilde farm, Agrelo. Excellent concentration and balance. Fermentation in French oak barrels for 30 days with the vineyard’s own yeasts, then aged for 24 months in first-use barrels. Complexity and elegance stand out on the nose. Notes of chocolate are perceived, harmonized with ripe fruits and spices, which makes the aromas of this wine really intense. In the mouth, the maturity of the tannins stands out, a broad and balanced finish, achieving a round and elegant wine.

Lamadrid founder Guillermo García built the Lamadrid winery in one of the oldest and foremost growing regions in Argentina: Agrelo, Mendoza. Héctor and Pablo Durigutti are partners with Guillermo and have assisted in the hand-crafted wines since the first vintage in 2005.

Lamadrid’s mission is to be the best representation of the Agrelo terroir and their philosophy is “Wine Is Made In The Vineyard, Let The Terroir Speak For Itself.”  Lamadrid owns three vineyards in Agrelo: Finca La Matilde (planted 1929), Finca Lamadrid (1973), and Finca La Suiza (2004). Their wines are all estate-grown from one of these single vineyards, and follow organic and sustainable farming practices and are unfiltered.
