Andrew's Tasting Note

Nose: sipping old Armagnac in a comfy old leather chair by the fire whilst enjoying dark chocolate and a Cuban cigar; dates, figs and dried apricots; soft black licorice Jujubes, treacle sauce and a touch of lightly salted caramel.

Palate: round, rich and fruity with delicate smoke and elegant peat; starts sweet and fruity with more dark chocolate, treacle sauce and soft black licorice; the tarry-peat is delicate and restrained is the clean smoke; more dried dark fruits, apricots and candied nuts.

Finish: lush, fruity and spicy with building earthy peat and maritime smoke.

Comment: elegant, rich and layered with some great flavours; the PX sherry has tamed the more medicinal notes of the spirit, but still allows the smoke, peat and salt to poke through; a great cigar dram, or for pairing with dark and rich desserts!

Curt's Comments

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? Well…not necessarily. Lagavulin 16 is an absolute classic single malt. We all know this. To tinker with it almost borders on blasphemous. But at the end of the day it’s hard to argue with results. After those initial sixteen seasons of slumber in predominantly ex-Bourbon Barrels, the mature spirit is then moved into beautiful old Pedro Ximenez Sherry Butts for a further year, imparting a deeply satisfying jamminess and complexity to the already enormous profile we know as Lagavulin. The results are, quite frankly, stunning.

Producer’s Tasting Note:

Nose: Intense peat and vanilla. A raisin sweetness checks the smoke. Iodine-edged peat and crisp, roasty malt. Satisfying and enticing.

Palate: A clear, grassy malt, then the peat lands – smoke filling the mouth. A very salty tang, the middle offers coffee, vanilla and fruit.

Finish: Incredibly long, even by Islay standards. Fruit, peat and long-lasting oak. Very chewable.
