This Bridgeland Wheat Whisky was not on our radar until the chaps at the Calgary distillery insisted we try a sample. Made from a mash of 80% Red Spring Wheat, and 20% Malted Barley from Penhold Alberta, the spirit was distilled after a long fermentation in pot stills before being filled into cask. It was initially matured in Virgin American Oak, before finishing in French Limousin Toasted Oak, which had been seasoned with Bridgeland's own Moscato Brandy. Bottled at 57%, exclusively for Kensington Wine Market, this is a great-value single-cask Canadian wheat whisky... and boy are we lucky they insisted we try it!
500ml mlAndrew's Tasting Note
Nose: big, rich, spicy, and decadent with soft fruits; ginger molasses cookies, pecan pie, and candied fennel; doughy, with fruit flan; a touch of green grapes and raisins; late dusty grain.
Palate: sweet, fruity, and rich, with loads of spice; figs in honey, cooked raisins, and more fruit flan; decadent and nutty, more pecan pie and ginger molasses cookies; boozy cherries, orange rind, and basically the finish from a good Old Fashioned cocktail; the wheat pokes through with a touch of dusty minerality and adds a soft floral touch; more white grapes.
Finish: warming, spicy, and nutty, with loads of fruit: Jujubes, fruit flan, and darker fruits; good length, with a soft mouthfeel.
Comment: while not our first-ever wheat whisky, this is unlike anything we have ever bottled before; it has the spicy-fruit profile of a barrel-proof American rye; but also the decadent balance of a French oak matured single malt; very drinkable.

Bridgeland Distillery — Calgary, Alberta
Bridgeland Distillery was founded in 2018 and resides right within — get this — Bridgeland in Calgary, Alberta. If you are looking to go there — and I suggest you do — it is on the corner located on the corner of Marsh Road and Edmonton Trail; just a few blocks North of the Bow River and Memorial Drive.
The Distillery is owned by Daniel Plenzik and Jacques Tremblay and produces a wide variety of spirits distilled from grain and also grapes. One of the things that sets Bridgeland apart is the reuse of different casks that have matured their own brandies and whiskies to add character to other aging spirits. For example: reusing casks that previously mature their brandy to then mature or finish some of their whiskies.
There is plenty to recommend from Bridgeland Distillery. A good place to start would be with their Single Blend; which is an in-house blend that combines a variety of their whisky styles that gets limited releases each year.
Bridgeland's releases are updated regularly as the distillery and their casks continue to mature.
