Look what has finally landed!

Late last year, we were fortunate enough to be romanced with the prospect of KWM's first exclusive single barrel of Tequila. It came about rather quickly and unexpectedly, during a meeting with the great people from Tromba (named for the rainstorms that bring life to Los Altos). The conversation went a little something like this: "Why don't we send a couple of you down to Guadalajara to pick a barrel?" ... "Oh, yeah, for sure. Hahaha." ... "How soon can you be ready?" ... "Ummm...wait, what?" A couple weeks later, Curt and Harmony were on a plane to Mexico.

While the two of them may have had very yin and yang experiences while in Jalisco (come ask us about it sometime!), they were 100% on the same page when it came to selecting a cask for the shop. After tasting through a great range of Tequila drawn from barrels resting in the Tromba warehouses, one particular cask stood taller than the others: Cask RO-161. This was tasted in cask at eight and a half months of age, but slept a wee bit longer in wood before bottling. It's still a Reposado but was tiptoeing towards being an Anejo. That extra time in wood only made this one better.

Our first Tequila, but definitely not our last.

Bottled overproof for us at 48% abv.

Curt's Tasting Note

Nose: Vanilla top notes, but the roasted agave shows through as loudly as we'd hoped. Very vegetal, with a wee squeeze of lime. A touch of tomato stem (you know that sticky feeling after pulling out the stem, and the smell that clings to your fingers?). Vegetable stock. Underripe rhubarb. Cracked peppercorn, almost arugula-like (or rocket, if you prefer). Spanish cedar, almost like the interior of a walk-in humidor. Toasty and charry, with maybe a faint whiff of Mole sauce. You can tell the barrel has reined the spirit in a bit, but definitely not tamed it.

Palate: Vanilla again, before an explosion of peppery agave notes. Very green, very earthy. Pleasantly 'dirty'. Cumin and coriander. Spanish cedar here as well. Again, tomato greens. Flavours of unlit Candela- meets Connecticut-wrapped cigars.

Finish: Stretches for miles. The slightly oxidized woodiness helps tamp some of the more primal spirit notes, but there's no hiding the raw ingredients. The earthiness that carries through the slow fade is gorgeous.
