Talisker's branding declares that it is "made by the sea", which is both accurate, but also a little misleading. It is milled, mashed, fermented and distilled on Sky, but the spirit is tankered off to the mainland for filling into casks, from which it never returns. So it is true that it is made by the sea, but it is matured in central Scotland... a long ways from the ocean!

Producer Tasting Note
Nose: A pungent nose with clean ozone-fresh sea-air and beach seaweed backed by richer, smokier notes, sweet malt and sultana sweetness from the cask; gloriously well combined and harmonious.
Palate: An oily-smooth texture, the taste at once smoky and briny yet sweet with rich fruit too, quickly growing more peppery, as woody spiciness takes a clear interest. Luxurious suggestions of roasted fig and sweet date are firmly backed throughout by peat smoke and sea-salt, and there’s a smoothness to the chili ‘catch’ as it goes down.
Finish: Long, powerful and while still sweet, now drying too, with lingering peat smoke and cocoa nibs.

It's a shame how scarce Lagavulin has become. The distillery just doesn't seem to have the stocks to keep the market wet at this point in time. Not to mention, we're not getting a lot of help from our local importers either. When the 2022 Distillers Edition showed up a few weeks back, we were quick to snap it up, because I think we all know by now that any Lagavulin is good Lagavulin.
This should be a particularly interesting version of the Distillers Edition; it's no longer the 16-year-old with a PX finish (read: almost 17 years), it's now a non-age-stated whisky with an undeclared finishing period. While that almost sounds like a bad thing, the reviews are better for this one than previous, older editions. Not to mention, for those that like their Islay malts to have a little more punching power, it's best to drink them a bit younger. The longer that liquid sits in those beautiful old warehouses, the softer the smoke becomes.
Shame about the 43%, but at this point, beggars can't be choosers.

One of the truly singular Scottish single malt whiskies, Talisker boasts a character unlike any other and is almost instantly recognizable in any of its forms. The distillery, only a dozen years away from its 200th anniversary, is known worldwide for its moderate level of peat and smoke, but more famously for the rich pepper/chili notes and briny seaside flavors that run through the DNA of all the malt produced there. Some whiskies require lengthy maturation to hit full stride. Talisker is one that not only shines in youth but actually showcases its brightest characteristics in its early years. The 10 year old is undoubtedly a special whisky but is approachable enough to be a go-to in the rotation.
