Highland Park Magnus is a new for 2018 (in Canada) no age statement Highland Park. Matured in sherry seasoned American oak casks and bottled at 40%.

"Magnus Eunson was a direct descendant of the Vikings who settled on Orkney hundreds of years ago. He set up his illicit still in a bothy (a small stone hut) at High Park, Kirkwall that’s still the site of our distillery today. And, while we say Highland Park was founded in 1798, in truth that’s just the year that the authorities caught up with Magnus – he was certainly making whisky before that!
"We stay true to our founder’s bold and uncompromising approach to whisky making – very little has changed here in the last 220 years. In MAGNUS, we celebrate this unbroken tradition with a single malt whisky, matured in Sherry seasoned American oak casks, that delivers notes of sweet vanilla, overlaid with our distinctive aromatic smokiness."

Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: fresh, honeyed and malty; soft citrus tones; white cupcakes with vanilla icing and sprinkles; burning heather on a muddy beach.
Palate: still fresh, thick, creamy and coating; honeyed and malty; more cupcakes with sprinkles; the smoke is still delicate, smouldering heather on a muddy beach; a touch waxy with citrus and subtle sherry.
Finish: drying and spicy; clean smoke, leather and earth.
Comment: miles from mind-blowing, but very drinkable for a sub $50 single malt; just wish it had been bottled at 46%+!

Highland Park, the northernmost of Scotland's distilleries, dates back to 1798. Definitely an island style with typical smokiness, but with elements of a classic single malt that include a smoothness, roundness and heather-honey accent all its own. Very capable of developing to great ages, the distillery is now making available some older vintages which display considerable depth and richness.

"Matured predominantly in European and American sherry seasoned oak casks, our iconic 12 Year Old single malt whisky is spicy and well-rounded, packed with the flavours of sun-kissed Seville oranges and rich fruitcake spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves; you’ll find molten heather honey in this whisky’s waves of heathery peat smoke. Valknut is the second release in Highland Park's Viking Legend series. Produced from a higher proportion of spirit peated with Orkney malt and predominantly matured in Sherry seasoned casks, Valknut is said to be a sweeter and smokier take on Highland Park. Bottled without added colouring at 46.8%.

"Valknut means ‘knot of those slain in battle’ and its symbol of three interlinked triangles appears on numerous artefacts from the Viking Age. The symbol is closely associated with the Norse god, Odin, who guided the spirits of the dead to the underworld and back to the world of the living, and is believed to represent the transition from life to death or the connection between earthly life and heavenly life."

Opened up to the Alberta market in early 2017, this is a great value bottling of Highland Park. The whisky has been matured in American oak and is bottled at 40%. We are looking forward to the opportunity to try it!
