The Rye brand takes its name from Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and hearkens back to that states long-lost but once highly regarded "Monongahela" rye whiskies. ​

Jack Daniel’s typical mash bill of 80% Corn, 12% Rye, and 8% Malted Barley. The mash was distilled and then put through the Lincoln County Process before being put into heavily charred virgin oak barrels made at the distillery’s own cooperage. Single barrel releases from Jack Daniel’s are typically 4 to 7 years old. Each bottle of Jack Daniel's Single Barrel is carefully selected before being bottled at 47% ABV.

The JD Single Barrel was introduced to the world in 1997. It is bottled at 94 Proof, or 47% ABV. The barrels are selected from the higher floors of Rickhouses and the aim is for all selected casks to have “subtle notes of caramel and spice with bright fruit notes and sweet aromatics for a Tennessee Whiskey” according to the Jack Daniel’s website. Every single barrel has some differences stylistically, though, so every bottle of it you buy might be very on the nose and palate.

At its base level, the Lincoln County Process used to make Tennessee Whiskey means that the new make spirit or white dog/white lightning is filtered through sugar maple charcoal before being put into barrels to age. Jack Daniel’s has its own version of this, wherein the distillery burns sugar maple boards/ricks to a heavy char and then sprays them down with water to prevent complete combustion. After burning the new charcoal is ground into pellets and packed into vats through which the 70% ABV new make spirit filters through. The filtered spirit is cut to 62.5% ABV and put into heavily charred virgin oak barrels to age away.

Beam Suntory has been putting out quite a few special releases American Whiskey-wise recently, including the Knob Creek Twice Barreled Rye. Similar to the Jim Beam Double Oak - this Knob Creek was given a secondary maturation in heavily charred virgin oak barrels. Knob Creek itself is produced at the Jim Beam Distillery in Clermont, Kentucky. Bottled at 50% ABV.

Uncle Nearest 1856 100 Proof Tennessee

Uncle Nearest Premium 100 Proof is bottled at 50% as the name alludes to. It is aged for made from a blend of whiskies that are at least 7 years old.

Uncle Nearest is a relatively new whiskey brand with a relatively old name. The legend of Uncle Nearest refers to an African American named Nathan "Nearest" Green, who purportedly was the distiller that showed Jack Daniels the ropes. Yes, that Jack Daniels.

The owners of the Uncle Nearest brand have started a distillery under the same name in Tennessee, but it only opened in 2018. For the time being, this Tennessee whisky is sourced from another distillery in the state. As it is labelled a Tennessee Whiskey, it has undergone what is known as the Lincoln County Process in which the new make spirit is filtered through sugar maple charcoal to mellow it before it is put into barrel for ageing.
