In 2000, Mitolo made its first Shiraz, and two years later its first Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 G.A.M. Shiraz is a classic McLaren Shiraz: it is chocolaty, textural and fleshy and sourced from Whites Valley— a tiny pocket. This ‘Four Cuttings’ Shiraz has a nose that is rich with blueberry and black cherries and flows through to the palate framed by soft and silken tannins. Fermented in open slate fermenters for seven days, basket pressed and matured in 15% new American and a balance of seasoned French oak for 16 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is ready to go on release but will reward cellaring for many years.
This ‘Four Cuttings’ cuvées take the Greenock Creek single-vineyard approach and expand it to include four select vineyards in the sub-regions of Tanunda, Koonunga, Lyndoch & Rosedale. These touchstone vineyards support the Greenock Creek aim to harmonize the contrasting characters and complete a full palate experience.

Philippe and Vincent retained about 32 acres of the family’s vineyards after the parent company was sold, including most notably a parcel of the original Thalabert vineyard, which is situated in the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. The parcel from the Thalabert vineyard that originally belonged to Paul Jaboulet Aîné was renamed Nouvelère, commemorating the ‘new era’. This 100% Syrah is picked from 50+-year-old vines and aged for 24 months in oak, 30% in 25hl barrels (called foudre) and 70% in small 228l oak barrels. Notes of exotic spice and campfire smoke circle the core of black cherry and blueberry fruit along with fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity.
