Scotch Malt Whisky Society Canada February 2014 Outturn

Our February 2014 release includes new releases from all three of the first three distilleries bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, distilleries 1, 2 and 3!  Some of these whiskies are very limited and will not last long.

  1. 1.172: Sophisticated, delicate & feminine – 55.7% – 19 Year – Refill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead – Speyside – Outturn: 230 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: “The nose had sweet freshness (elderflower, apple strudel, white jellybabies) with a tantalizing feminine feeling – powder puff and heather scentedsoap. Further interest came from malt loaf, tobacco leaf, soft leather, marmalade, toffee and aromatic duck. On the palate we caught intense fruity sweetness, spices and perfumes – people mentioned spiced apple chutney, poached pears, Greek yogurt with honey, star anise, ginger, clove and flower stems. The reduced nose picked up the sophisticated, delicate threads of dewberry (Body Shop), geranium, pot-pourri, apple and scented candles. The palate now balanced toffee with sandalwood, blackcurrant and flowers.Another gem from the Marypark maestros.” Drinking Tip: “For a romantic moment – hopefully.” - $164.99
  2. 2.83: Intense explosion of taste – 55.2% – 19 Year – Refill Hogshead – Outturn: 228 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: “The nose really grabbed our interest – so much in it – summer fruits, cherry Bakewell, apple and berry tea; maple syrup, toffee and Fry’s Turkish Delight; mulled wine, tobacco and old books. The palate was intense, sharp and tickly – tutti-frutti bubble-gum and apple sours crashed into darker, spicy flavours (chilli pepper, gingerbread, treacle scones) resulting in an explosion of taste. The reduced nose – simply amazing – fruit-punch, black-jacks, tea chests, foamy shrimp sweets, wax and shoe polish. The palate lost some intensity but retained the sweet complexity of toffee apples, cinnamon, blackcurrant and lavender honey. The distillery was once protected by two pistols!” Drinking Tip: “Let the children get excited about sweets- we have this.” - $174.99
  3. 26.71: The great outdoors - 57.3% – 25 Year – Refill Sherry Butt – Outturn: 464 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: “The fresh nose brought us outdoors – wet sand, chalky cliffs and rock pools with fishing nets catching shellfish and crabs. We then enjoy starfruit, bananas and nectarines, interwoven with fresh sea breeze and cooling mentholic air. There’s clean linen on the line with seaspray. The taste revealed saltiness, like eating shellfish on the beach or swimming with your mouth open! There was a waxiness too, like citronella candles and seaweed.Bacon and old reels of button thread also made an appearance. The reduced nose became soapier and savoury; linen and lux flakes, starch washing and woollen jumpers; pork and baked ham and brown scallops. The reduced palate was soft, clean and sappy – marshmallows on a stick, lemongrass and cumin, and spicy scallops. Spring water from the Clynemilton burn is used to produce this fruity, slightly smoky whisky.” Drinking Tip: “Outdoors at the coast.” - $171.49
  4. G8.2: Spun sugar and spooned honey – mmm! – 62.4% – 23 Year – Refill Hogshead – Outturn: 252 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: “The nose was warm, comforting and luxurious – loads of toffee, vanilla ice-cream, crème caramel and butterscotch; we also detected roast beef, hay, red berries and a chest of drawers lined with the Financial Times. The palate did not disappoint – thick caramel, hot fudge, rum and raisin ice-cream and dark chocolate mousse; beyond that, new wood, cardamom and pink peppercorns guaranteed complexity. Water jazzed up the nose producing spices (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, cardamom) like rabbits out of a hat. The palate now mellifluously mouth-coating with ‘monkey’s blood’ (a strawberry sauce to go over ice-cream), chocolate Brazils, spun sugar and spooned honey – mmm! This Alloa grain distillery closed in 1993.” Drinking Tip: “If ice-cream parlours sold whisky, this would be the one.” - $174.99
  5. 3.197: Body shop and bath salts – 55.6% – 14 Year – Refill Sherry Butt – Outturn: 590 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: “Fresh and mineralic – bath salts, powdered limestone, sea breeze(but, as one panel member remarked, ‘comfortable and not elemental: more like the scents of an up-market spa’) – gaining toffee notes after a while. With water, it remains mineralic, but now there is a distinct clean smokiness, and a scent of freshly laundered towels. At natural strength, the texture is smooth, the taste sweet, mineralic and smoky; warming as a sauna bath, with traces of black currants or flowering currants in the aftertaste. The taste holds together well at reduced strength: soft, pleasant and feminine, with a lightly smoky finish. A gentle example from Islay’s oldest distillery.” – Drinking Tip: “In the spa – after the full treatment.” - $131.99
  6. 93.54: Manly, robust and reassuringly honest – 58.2% – 10 Year – Refill Barrel – Outturn: 235 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: “The nose seemed fairly typical – coal, hessian, seaweed and garage workshops – all dominated by minty sweetness (Blackpool Rock, spearmint chews, Bendick’s mint chocolates); eventually turning even sweeter (honey, coconut). In reduction it smelled of peppery herbs, salty Manzanilla, lemon, smoked almonds, aniseed and fish oil. The palate was undoubtedly manly, robust and very dry, with ash, bitter chocolate and pepper wrestling each other -also suggestions of orange and lemon rind, wilted spinach and over-dried woollen mitts – with water, sweet, nutty and reassuringly honest – olive oil, creamy mushrooms, mint and pepper. The distillery is named after Scotland’s glen.” Drinking Tip: “A dram that would work well with food, or after a spell of hard, physical work.” - $111.99
  7. 127.32: A manly dram – 65.2% – 10 Year – Refill Barrel – Outturn: 244 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: “We enjoyed unravelling this nose – medicinal, tarry, kippers, big smoke, creosote, pine cones, harbours, caramelized parsnips, soor plooms, burnt toast, seared scallops, smoked vanilla, etc. The palate was a whopping, stomach-coating assault of tiger balm, tar, smoke, ash, embers, charred mackerel, toffee sauce and rugby changing rooms – ‘a real man’s dram!’ said one; ‘Rocket fuel!’another. The reduced nose – Branston and HP sauce on baconrolls, chocolate limes, coffee, cinnamon and moth balls. The reduced palate – ginger in dark chocolate, Arbroath Smokies with lime citric zing – but now the sweetness really began to emerge.A manly dram from a laddie distillery.” Drinking Tip: “Hip flask-fishing a hill loch – after hunting- maybe after fighting dragons…” - $119.99
