Scotch Malt Whisky Society Canada July 2013 Outturn

The following 5 whiskies are from July 2013 Scotch Malt Whisky Society Canada Outturn. For more information on the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, the world’s largest whisky club, visit www.smws.ca .

We launched the whiskies tonight at at two sold out tastings, each with 30 attendees. We also raised $600 which will be donated to the Red Cross in support of Flood Relief. All of them were very interesting, but whiskies 3, 4 and 5 all stood out for me!

  1. 36.57: Puff Candy & vanilla sponge53.4% – 22 Year – Refill Ex-Bourbon Hogshead – Speyside – Outturn: 251 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: “A spicy nose-feel resolves as ginger sponge and lemon sponge with creamy custard (‘vanilla Victoria sponge-cake with lemon drizzle’ offered the chef among us), then reminded us all of a ‘whitewash’ – clean cotton sheets on a clothes line. The taste is much sweeter than expected – runny honey, puff candy, honeycomb: it drinks well, straight. Water alters the aroma considerably: there are still some honey notes, even a trace of toffee, but now joined by‘sweet evening perfume’ and pale floral scents (primroses?). A pleasant texture and an overall sweet taste – jelly beans as well as honeycomb. The distillery takes its name from Speyside’s highest mountain.” Drinking Tip: “A dessert dram.” – $176.49
  2. 26.88: Midsummer night’s dram - 61.8% – 9 Year – 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel – Highland, Northern – Outturn: 225 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: “The nose combined fruity notes (pears in syrup, lychees, red apple, lemon) with real honeycomb (including beeswax) scented candles and fresh linen; all underlined with wood impressions (balsa, polished oak furniture, cinnamon). The palate was juicy and tasty –an attractive, ‘wow factor’ burst of exotic fruit flavours (watermelon, mango) with some hay and a pleasant, mouth-coating, waxy texture. The reduced nose delivered refreshers, sherbet lemons, orange blossom, gooseberry, trail mix and mint – a very summery dram sniffer’s delight. The palate – citric, sweet, buttery, flying saucers – had us doffing our hats respectfully. The distillery was built by the Marquess of Stafford.” Drinking Tip: “Summertime –  the livin’ is easy.” – $109.99
  3. 35.75: Victorian walled garden in Las Vegas – 57.9% – 17 Year – Toasted & Seasoned Hogshead – Speyside – Outturn: 206 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: “We found ourselves in a waiting room of a sports physiotherapist, muscle spray, shea butter, massage oil and warming up cream, next to a disinfected tiled floor and a newly opened First Aid Box. To taste, we moved into the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas with belly dancers and an oriental market – hot like a desert and intense like Turkish delight with rose water – intriguing depth. With water the nose led us into a Victorian walled garden, damp bricks, herbal notes and the smell of a variety of roses. The taste is now like toasted cinnamon bread with butter, an apple crumble with cream and the enticing sweetness of a ripe mango.” Drinking Tip: “Whilst reading a book, preferably the Tales of 1001 Nights.” - $148.99
  4. 30.73: Plum jam & toffee apples – 58.5% – 11 Year – Refill Port Pipe – Speyside – Outturn: 758 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: “We found a very interesting nose with lots going on – plum jam, peach, apricot, rose-hip syrup, cinnamon toast, honey, toffee, almond, celery leaf and fresh oak. The palate started with crisp greengage freshness, before turning to pomegranates and red toffee apples, closing with dried figs and dates, mild spice and granola cereal notes. Water deepened the nose impressions –Danish pastries, Special K with dried strawberries, rose pot-pourri,sauna wood, hay, leather and cigar boxes. The reduced palate boasted fruit baskets, tingling ginger spice, tobacco, toffee and dark chocolate with cherry pieces. The distillery is operated by Berry Bros and Rudd.” Drinking Tip: “Different and versatile – an unusual aperitif perhaps – or while doing the ironing.” - $115.49
  5. 53.173: Glowing embers on the tongue - 59.8% – 16 Year – Refill Sherry Butt – Outturn: 540 Bottles – Panel’s Tasting Note: “Typical sooty, briny and oily fish scents initially with citric, herbal and medicinal background notes but there were also shout outs for‘wet fish boxes’, ‘peppered roast carrots’ ‘light honey on brown toast’, and ‘tart berries’. To taste the Panel agreed it had a very ashy texture – hot ash, ‘like glowing embers’ said one – but the vanilla and honey helped counterbalance the salty, smoky and sweet medicinal characters. The addition of water brought out harbourside notes with drying kelp, dried fish, and rock pools; less of an impact to taste but very refreshing nonetheless. This distillery was completely rebuilt in 1972.” Drinking Tip: “When you want to THINK of a long walk along the beach.” - $142.99
