"Farmer and artist, drudge and dreamer, hedonist and masochist, alchemist and accountant — the winegrower is all these things, and has been since the Flood." Hugh Johnson
Do you get a buzz when you find a new "jewel" to add to your collection? So do we! Let us share with you the fruits of our labors and introduce you to some of the winemakers who create these rare and unique gems.
Dalwhinnie (Australia) Recently introduced into Canada by the Kensington Wine Market, Dalwhinnie has long been considered one of the great wine producers in Australia. Located in Moonambel Victoria, the wines from Dalwhinnie show tremendous depth of fruit flavor, reflecting relatively low-yielding but well-maintained vineyards.
Didier Dagueneau (France) The "enfant terrible" first gained notoriety as a motocross racer; apparently he was quite good and made enough money to buy a small plot of vines. Dagueneau makes some of the most concentrated, tightly knit and complex Sauvignon Blanc in the world. Didier makes wine to give pleasure, like art and beautiful music. 100% Bio-dynamic.
Greenock Creek (Australia) This limited production winery has achieved cult-status. Approximately 20 cases of Greenock Creek is allocated to Canada. The Kensington Wine Market is fortunate to be the only place in the country that carries these rare gems. Greenock Creek's old dryland, low-yielding Barossa vineyards produce wines of unusual depth of flavor and character.
Hendry (USA) George Hendry is a small winegrower with a vineyard located on the bench between Napa's Carneros and Mount Veeder. His 120 acre parcel is known for producing some of the highest quality grapes in California. He regularly provides for Mondavi's Opus One and is responsible for some of the most intense Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes that have gone into the Mondavi wines. In 1992 George began holding back small amounts of grapes from the best vineyard sites for the Hendry label. The winery produces wines only from the Hendry vineyards.
Hewitson (Australia) Dean Hewitson was voted best new winemaker in Australia for the year 2000 by Penguin Books. He sources his grapes from the Barossa and the McLaren Vale. The age of the vines range from 60 to 150 years. Hewitson wines are a wonderful combination of power and finesse.
Moss Wood (Australia) Widely regarded as one of the best wineries in Margaret River, Western Australia, and in fact all of Australia. The Australian auction house Langtons has rated the Cabernet Sauvignon as exceptional, a status that it shares with Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace.
Royal Tokaji Wine Company (Hungary) The Royal Tokaji Wine Company was established in 1989 when Hugh Johnson and "flying" winemaker Peter Vinding-Diers purchased vineyards in and around the village of Mad. In 1700, the quality of the wines coming from this area was so great that the vineyards were classified in that year as 1st, 2nd and 3rd Growth (16 years before Chianti and 56 years before the Douro). Royal Tokaji uses only grapes that have been affected with noble rot. There is no doubt that wines from the Royal Tokaji Wine Company are considered benchmark Tokaji by all other producers.
