About Grape Types

WHITE GRAPES

Chardonnay: If you know only one white grape varietal, chances are it is Chardonnay! Although this variety prefers a coolish climate, it is a very adaptable grape produced in many countries all over the world. It is most famous in France where it is used in white Burgundy and, of course, Champagne.
  • Colour: ranges from pale to full yellow
  • Aroma: appley, buttery, nutty
  • Flavor: high in fruit, ripe and round with good acidity (it is often aged in oak)
Chenin Blanc: Like Riesling, this variety can cover the spectrum from tartly dry to honey sweet. Surprise - this is the most widely planted grape in South Africa!
  • Colour: light to medium yellow
  • Aroma: melon, honey, wet wool
  • Flavor: light, delicate sweetness, clean, fresh
Gewurztraminer: The name says it all: Gewurz means spicy and Traminer is German for "from the town of Tramin". It can range in taste from very dry to off-dry or sweet when harvested late. It grows best in cool growing regions, such as New Zealand, Canada (we make some of the best), Germany, Austria and France (Alsace).
  • Colour: medium to full yellow
  • Aroma: lychee nuts, roses
  • Flavor: cinnamon spice, fruity, rich
Riesling: One of the finest white wine grapes. It makes some of the best bone-dry wines (surprised?), some of the finest dessert wines and every nuance of sweetness in between! It grows well in cool climates like Germany, France (Alsace), Austria and Canada.
  • Colour: ranges from pale yellow to light gold
  • Aroma: perfumy
  • Flavor: light to medium bodied, floral and fruity
Sauvignon Blanc: An extremely versatile, early ripening grape. It is grown all over the world but is particularly popular in France and New Zealand. It is also used to make Fume Blanc (oak aged). Wine geek note: Robert Mondavi introduced the term "Fume Blanc", borrowing the name of Sauvignon Blanc's homeland, Pouilly-Fume.
  • Colour: greenish yellow
  • Aroma: grassy, gooseberry, passion fruit, papaya, asparagus
  • Flavor: zesty and vibrant, crisp finish
RED GRAPES

Cabernet Sauvignon: Often referred to as "The noble red grape". Why? It has a consistent taste wherever grown. It is the dominant grape in Medoc (Bordeaux, France) where it originated, but is successful in Australia, California, and Argentina, just to name a few.
  • Colour: deep red
  • Aroma: blackcurrant, plums
  • Flavor: tannic, full bodied, cassis, earthy
Gamay: The only grape to grow in the Beaujolais region. There is a marked difference between ordinary Beaujolais and "Crus" grapes. The latter come from certain villages and are of much higher quality, are more structured and have a nice round finish.
  • Colour: light purple
  • Aroma: flowers, very fragrant
  • Flavor: light bodied, acidic, cherries, strawberries
Grenache: Grown extensively in southern France and Spain (where it is known as Garnacha). It is the vital ingredient used to spice up the famous wines of Rioja and Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
  • Colour: light cherry red
  • Aroma: strawberries, raspberries, cherries
  • Flavor: medium-full bodied, red fruits, hints of spice
Merlot: Its berries are larger than those of Cabernet Sauvignon which means it is less tannic and softer in the finished wine. Merlot gives fruitiness to most Medoc (Bordeaux, France) wines, and is the dominate grape in St.Emilion and Pomerol (also Bordeaux). It is now a major varietal planted worldwide and arguably the best varietal grown in California.
  • Colour: deep ruby red
  • Aroma: soft purple fruits such as blackberries and black plums
  • Flavor: medium-full bodied, soft tannins, black plums, blackberries
Pinot Noir: Often called the "heartbreak grape" because it is finicky, troublesome, enigmatic and challenging to grow. With skill this grape can provide awe-inspiring wines. The prototype for Pinot Noir is red Burgundy. The grape has been successfully exported to Argentina, Spain, Oregon and California.
  • Colour: light cherry red
  • Aroma: cherries, earthy
  • Flavor: medium bodied, cherries, acidic, mushrooms, silky tannins
Sangiovese: It literally translates to "the blood of Jove". This Italian grape has proven itself in the Tuscany region, especially in the Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti districts. It is Italy's most widely planted grape.
  • Colour: brick red
  • Aroma: cherries, flowers
  • Flavor: firm, can range from medium to full bodied, high acidity and medium tannins, currants, cherries
Syrah/Shiraz: Originally from the northern Rhone in France, this grape has also found unprecedented success in Australia. Wines are sturdy with huge ageing potential.
  • Colour: deep red/purple
  • Aroma: spicy, leather, jammy, blackberry
  • Flavor: medium-full bodied, high tannins, spice, earthy dark fruit
